Strange R9 280 problem.

Go to solution Solved by SkilledRebuilds,

Wouldn't the boost clock only come into play when the card has something to do...

On idle wouldn't it sit at its idle clock anyway.

When using MSI in the settings you can use unofficial overclocking mode to disable powertune/powerplay features so it won't declock or use those features.

Then I use two profiles, one for idle 2d Mode and one for 3D mode.

I've noticed something rather weird about my Sapphire R9 280. After a cold boot, the card refuses to keep it's boost (whether overclocked or stock) even if I have the power limit to 20%, however, if I restart the PC, it seems to work fine. Same thing happens if I put the PC to sleep. It loses the ability to keep it's speed until I reboot.

I've been overclocking with AMD Overdrive and I've tried it also with Afterburner with the same results.

I've disabled ULPS in case it was that, but that didn't help.

Anyone have any ideas?

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Yeah, I tested using Heaven benchmark and clocked down when it hit 100% usage. Not a drama after I rebooted though.

It might be an idea to disable clock jumping with Afterburner.

Tried disabling powerplay with Afterburner and it worked a treat!

Now it jumps to the correct clocks everytime.

I've set up 2D and 3D profiles  and it works fine.

Thanks SkilledRebuilds!

Giggity.

I've not liked powertune since changing from my 7950 (280) to my 290.

Glad the profiles option works for you.
