1080p or higher for gaming?

Go to solution Solved by Archangel1994,

1440p if you turn off AA (which makes sense, turning up resolution turning down fake resolution) and maybe tone the dials down a bit.

Hey, I recently built my first rig about a month ago, and I wanted to get a Monitor to compliment my hardware.

Build:

I5-4670K @4.5Ghz

H100i

(2 x 4gb) 8gb Corsair Vengeance pro 2400Mhz

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3Gb, OC~ 1400Mhz/3250Mhz

Asus MAXIMUS VI Impact

256Gb Samsung 840 Pro SSD

1TB WD Caviar Black HDD

I wanted to know if I should stick with the, ye olde tried n' true 1080p, 24" to 27" monitor; or go with a more, Uber solution, like that new fancy thing called 4K. All joking aside, I really want your thoughts and ideas, and help me find a monitor to suit my needs. Thanks! (Please keep it professional) (No spam) :D

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

with a 780 you can get a 1440 panel and in most games it should be fine since you can turn down AA

Edit: holy balls 1400 mhz on your 780 even my best card can only do about 1260mhz i am super impressed

Well any 2560x1080 monitor will do just fine, any 2560x1440 mon. will also be fine, and you can get away with using the ROG swift and the 3440x1440 monitor.

"Have you tried turning it off and on again?"

2560x1080 up to 2560x1440 will suit your card (Even with AA)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Thanks! I worked with it all day slowly cranking up the Clock and Mem while using Unigine V, and H to benchmark and check for artifacts, and OCCT to make sure it was stable. I got lucky; my cpu is stuck @4.5Ghz and won't go any higher no matter how much voltage I throw at it. (I am being careful and watching temps as well as not going too high), but my GPU Clocks like a BOSS, and runs sweetly, with little voltage increase and stable.

Thanks a lot guys! I'm really glad to have a community of intellectual people and not little kids. The PC community is truly the best. I'll check out newegg and PcPartpicker for some good monitors, around 1440p. Thanks again. :D

These are all great posts and ideas but unfortunately I can only select 1 right answer. Thanks to all.

I agree, 1440p is your best bet with your rig.  single GPU cards aren't quite up to the challenge of 4k displays, plus the software is still catching up (poor scaling in most cases).  You'll be very happy with a 1440p monitor =)

How much of a performance hit can I expect from going from 1080p to 1440p?

well, in terms of pixels, 1440p is 1440x2560 = 3686400

1080p is 1920x1080 = 2073600

and 3686400 / 2073600 = 1.73

So with 1440p, you are processing 73% more pixels when compared to 1080p.  that's going to be a lot more work for your GPU.  That's why you need one of the best single cards to use that resolution.

Perhaps somebody else with personal experience can speak to the difference from a practical stand point.
