My hands shake so I can't really game anymore so I try to find walkthroughs of any game that interests me.  Unfortunately it's hard to find ones that don't annoy me in some way so I started thinking about creating a standard checklist or a rating system that players could be guided by to improve the quality of their recordings and I thought this would be a good place to go for input. To start off I'll just make a list of things I like or don't like and we can go from there.

  • I like commentary.
  • a blind playthrough does not excuse stupidity; knowing how the game works is not "cheating".
  • laughing at your own stupidity e.g., running off the same cliff 3 times in a row, is not funny.
  • game mechanics and in-game decisions should be explained.
  • a playthrough should be thorough as far as main and side quests are concerned unless they require multiple playthroughs.  You don't need to seek out every trophy/item.
  • If at first you don't succeed, assuming it wasn't dumb luck that got you killed last time, try something else.
  • Lack of brightness is not "atmosphere", it just makes it hard to see what's going on.
  • minimum 720p upload at decent settings.
  • Most decent games have a wiki/wikia pretty soon after launch.  Looking up game mechanics you don't understand should be encouraged.
  • don't talk over dialog or cut-scenes
  • subtitles help
  • cutting out excessive backtracking is fine but if you're making cuts b/c you keep "running off the same cliff", etc. you have bigger problems.
  • haste makes dead.

So I guess for me it comes down to knowing how the game works and explaining it, being thorough, making intelligent choices and explaining them, and using decent settings for recording and upload.  I realize I probably put more thought into these "games" than most people but, for now, this is the only way I can get enjoyment out of gaming until they make a direct-to-brain interface. Let me know what you think.

I want someone who will have heaps of fun not just because people ask them to play the game but because they really like the game. My favorite play through was OMFGcata and WOWcrendor and there play through of saints row 3, i was laughing so hard i couldnt breath like literally.

I really enjoy watching SSoH.  He has a nice large backlog of videos to enjoy and plays most genres.  I particularly enjoyed his GTA playthroughs, since he will often do things that lead to hilarious consequences.

He is not the most thorough player when it comes to sidequests but he is careful to not talk over cutscenes and he always plays with subtitles on.  On the rare occasions where something requires a long redo of a misson, he will cut that part from the recording.  The times that he leaves the mistakes in just add to the humor in my opinion.  I'm sure he's not everyone's cup of tea but I hope I pointed you in the right direction.

NevardEQ is an excellent let's player with a comfortable voice who is knowledgeable about the games he plays and a skilled player at that. Check out his walkthroughs of Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Castlevania: Symphony of The Night, very comprehensive indeed. I'd say hes as close to a perfect let's player there is as far as I'm concerned anyways, though obviously I carry with me my personal bias on the subject.

Add faking being scared/easily startled and what you have is basically PewDiePie, I just don't understand how and why just WHY people watch that guy.

I mean seriously, running around with a barrel yelling ''RAPE!! RAAPE!'' can't be funny to people, no way I refuse to believe it, /sigh

I guess I should add that, while occasional cursing due to being surprised/frightened is to be expected, I don't enjoy listening to someone who's every other word is ****.  I also find frequent crude sexual references distasteful.  I realize many of these gamers are still in their teens but some of them are really offensive.  I hope, at least, they don't speak like that around the proverbial dinner table.

Ive started making playthroughs, but I find it a bit hard to talk a lot while playing.

I watched one of his playthroughs.  He plays well and intelligently. He's not the most thorough in terms of side-quests but he does stop to look up things he doesn't understand.  Unfortunately, he curses constantly so I can only stomach listening to him a few videos at a time.

I've been watching a fellow who goes by culveyhouse for a while and, while he has an unfortunate tendency to injure/kill his own followers, he plays fairly thoroughly and intelligently.  Being a back-seat player and, by nature, a very methodical person, I find him occasionally impatient, forgetful, or illogical but, as he points out, nobody remembers everything all the time and everyone enjoys their own style of play.  He curses far less than most i've seen and edits out repeated deaths and unnecessary travel so as not to bore the audience while fast-forwarding through parts that may be informative but tedious or time-consuming.  Overall I find his vids most enjoyable.

That's basically what Nerdcubed does. Dodger does good lets plays but she doesn't do them all that often compared to others.

Word of warning: Do not watch vids from downphoenix if you wish to keep your sanity.  He refers to himself in the 3rd person, has the memory of a goldfish, and when he does bother looking anything up or taking advice, he only looks at part of it, is surprised that it didn't work and insists his game is bugged.  Also, occasionally gets things right through dumb luck and declares himself a genius.  Should probably be sterilized for the good of humanity.
