2D and 3D rendering GPU difference?

Hey so I'm wondering does having a better GPU lets say (GTX 770 vs a AMD 7770). Does the GPU still render something like a movie (2D) faster than a processor? My friend says a better GPU will only render faster if it's 3D stuff. I think it makes it faster for both 2D and 3D.

It makes everything faster. 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D, whatever you throw at it.
