IPS Glow

VulsaviiK

So, I think I've finally found an IPS monitor that is going to perform satisfactory for my needs, low lag, nice colours etc. A Dell U2414H

But I've heard of something called IPS Glow being tossed around. What exactly is this? Does it vary from monitor to monitor? Anything I should be looking out for?

Its basically when you are on full black you may or may not (depending on the quality of the monitor) see some back-light bleed around the edges. Personally I don't have it with my screens or if i do its not noticeable.

Its honestly not that noticable except in SUPER dark scenes of a movie or on a full black page

In gaming browsing and editing photos and stuff I really dont notice

TFT Central mention it in their reviews if you want more info

Ah ok, the review I saw on TFT mentioned backlight bleed but I saw IPS Glow mentioned elsewhere and thought it was something different

Thank you

IPS glow is different to backlight bleed. With IPS glow, you basically just see a rainbow--like effect when moving in any direction around the display. That's the best way that I can describe it.

So, discolouration when you look at it from different angles?

When you have a completely black screen you get a slight "glow" and at angles it can look a bit patchy with the glow shifting to a dark grey in areas - a bit like backlight bleed but no where near as pronounced and much more even. The best way I could describe it (its kinda hard though) is its like your screen is slightly furry and catches the ambient light if you know what I mean ;). Its only really noticeable when the whole screen is completely black though, if you have anything else on the screen, even a dark scene, it becomes pretty much/completely unnoticeable.

Basically if the screens completely black you don't get a nice jet black like you would see on a plasma or CRT. You generally don't notice it in normal use and it is very different then backlight bleed which is annoying in normal use, I'm a fan of horror (dark) games so if it was really bad I wouldn't be using a PLS/IPS, on the other hand backlight bleed drives me nutty in those sorts of games.

That's fine then I guess. I rarely have a pitch black screen. I'm more worried about motion blur tbh, coming from a TN panel with a 1ms response time The review I've seen of the Dell U2414H seemed decent. I guess I don't really play many games optimized to run at a higher frame rate than 60, and the 4ms response time and like, 4.05ms overall lag should make it ok for everything.

I guess we'll find out, I'll be throwing it straight in the deep end with a bit of Street Fighter IV when I get it

Hi, I dont know where you live so I dont know what price it may be for you but check EIZO Foris FS2333. It is just slightly more expensive than that DELL in my country. I am using it and I am totaly happy with it. But if it is expensive for you then that DELL is very good too.

That monitor is discontinued. EIZO monitors are a bitch to get here in Australia.

I think I'll be happy with the Dell. Good colours, and low lag. Considering one of my favourite games is Street Fighter, I need the latter, monitor performance > colours. I've seen people be all like "Nah man, it's only a frame or two of lag". That, to me, might as well translate to "I instantly lose every game I play" when I'm playing one of my fav games.

We'll see, if not, I'll just hold onto my BenQ or my Asus monitor
