i7 4790k only shows as 2 physical cores and 4 threads...

Volptar

Hey all, long time lurker, first time poster.  I'm having an issue with my intel stuffs (I'm normally an AMD man, but had to give Intel a shot).

I have a Gigabyte GA-z97x-ud5h mobo, intel i7 4790k (stock everything), 8GB Gskill ddr3 1600mhz, dual Asus Radeon 7850 in crossfire, OCZ 700w power suppy, Swiftech h220x water cooler.  This rig is fairly new only had it for about two or so weeks.

It was working great, and then yesterday I installed the swiftech water cooler on it.  Boot took a little longer than normal, but I didn't think anything of it. All threads were showing in the gadget I'm using.  So I check temps, start to run some stability tests and torture test to see how the water cooler is doing.  I decide to run prime 95 small ffts with 8 threads.  As soon as I hit start the computer shuts down immediately.  I attempt again, same result.  By this point I haven't noticed any core issues.  I run some test, check aida 64 torture test which works fine and basically ignore it because it is stable in other tests.  I downloaded RealTemp 3.7 to see temps and this is when I notice that I am only showing 2 core temps and eventually I realize that CPUz only shows 2 cores and 4 threads..

I've done everything bios wise all the way up to flashing the bios to try and resolve the issue.  I'm considering pulling the CPU out and sending it back to newegg as defective.  Has anyone heard of this issue or got any ideas on how to fix (or if it can be fixed).  Even the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool is showing the processor as working fine..

It could be a faulty processor !

If you have a bios update then install the latest bios and try again.......

otherwise get a replacement.

sounds to me like its to do with the fact you mounted your water cooler wrong and ran a stress test and fried the cpu :P

I would boot into Linux from a USB drive to confirm.

Good call, I'm gonna give that a try.

already re-flashed the bios with the latest version, also the mobo has dual bios capability so I have tried both.

Open up msconfig (Start > type "msconfig" > hit enter)

Go to the Boot tab and hit Advanced options

Check to make sure the number of processors (cores) isn't limited to 2. Max it out / uncheck it.

Hopefully that helps.

Hmm...that is weird. Definitely not normal. If you can't fix it I would definitely send it back and explain to Newegg the odd problem with it. It really does seem like Intel put the wrong name on the wrong CPU. If you can send it back to Newegg they can then get it checked by Intel and see what the problem is. It may just be defective. Newegg should give you a new non-faulty one back, they may even test it themselves.

have you also tried enabling all 4 cores via bios?

Ok so I took Name Taken's advice and booted into linux (never actually got all the way in because my keyboard wouldn't work so I couldn't hit enter to get into the demo..), but I reboot into Windows and now I show 4 cores and 8 threads. WTF?

Good advice, I had checked that after I noticed the issue and it only gave me options of 1-4 so I left it unchecked, which theoretically should automatically use all possible cores.

No. Although my status here is noob, I have mounted a few water coolers (not really complicated).  But I'll give you kudos on a good thought  ^_^
