Looking into a new PSU to replace my crazily loud existing.

I'm looking for roughly 5-600watts and preferably under $100.  Dead silence would be nice, if not something close.

I ran into the Be Quiet! Pure Power L8 ($80) so I'm more or less looking for an equivalent or better for less change out of my pocket.

The RM550W is a great power supply, it the fan only spins up when it reaches a specific usage percentage.

@theonlyBuster

Don't buy a PSU based on how quiet it is, buy a PSU based on the quality of the internal components. Under load you will not be able to hear it over your CPU, GPU and case fans anyways.

The Corsair RM's silence is overadvertised. There are a lot of better PSUs for the price, they just don't have the (honestly pointless) hybrid fan feature.

To be completely honest, my sorta mid-range Corsair CX600 is dead f*ucking quiet. I have to put my ear right up against the PSU and I still can only hear a slight hum.

Well what would you recommend?

I'm opening up to any reputable brand.  My only parameters are a quiet running and preferably under $100.  I tried to keep it open as to not limit the feedback.

Though I will say the modular feature is quite nice.

Meh, the Corsair RM550 is obviously completely silent at low to moderate load, but apparently gets loud at high load. And the quality issues with the Corsair RM series should be well known by now.

Well, there are lots of options. I'd look at a Seasonic S12G 550W or Rosewill Capstone 650M. Or an EVGA Supernova G2 750W if you want the best sub-$100 unit around.

corsair rm550?

It's a quiet psu

how in the world can you recommend the mediocre rm550 for 109$ when the seasonic X660 is at the same price? hybrid fan design, the fan rarely spins

or the seasonic G550 for 80$

cooler master V550 - seasonic inside

and for 10$ more the rosewill tachyon 550 80+ platinum, which is a rebranded super flower golden king 550.hybrid fan also.premium unit

all are better than rm550.japanese caps

e: damn the G2 750W is at the same price too.super flower oem.premium unit

RM was the first quiet psu that came up in my mind, same as @Aniallation, i would pefer the G2 750W psu instead of the RM.

The 550W version seems to be more expensive than the 650W version though.

...The 550W is $80, the 650 is $90

If you're referring to the Mail-In rebate (Promo), NewEgg no longer offers that.

And yes $10 isn't much, but why tack on an extra $10 for something I simply don't need in this specific build?
