I've recently noticed that the price of Z87 MOBO's have dropped dramatically and I was wondering how big of a performance difference I'd get between 4670K and Z87 or 4690K and Z97?

4690k tends to overclock more consistently and run a bit cooler. Although if the price delta was significant I'd go z87.

Also @faceman reportedly has better overclock results on a z97 board (same exact CPU)

Not that much and it will last you long enough for gaming in terms or performance. If you plan to change the pc about 5-10 years from now z87 it good but if you want an upgrade earlier for got z97

Beware of him that is slow to anger; for when it is long coming, it is the stronger when it comes, and the longer kept. Abused patience turns to fury.

The price difference in the boards I'm looking at is about $45.

I think it's worth it if you're willing to give out the extra $45. :)

It may be hard to find an i5-4670k.  All of the stores I know of have cleared stock.  The i5-4670k is a hit or miss overclocker.  Either you can overclock like a champ, or you have to push 1.3v to even hit 4.2, and of course a few in the middle.  The i5-4690k is a much more consistent overclocker, where you are seemingly guaranteed to get an "average" overclock of around 4.4-4.6.

I had an i5-4670k + Z87 motherboard.  I have a fantastic i5-4670k chip.  I could do 4.7Ghz @ 1.275v or 4.5Ghz @ 1.20 on the Z87-A motherboard.  I recently switched to a Z97-AR motherboard, but kept the same i5-4670k.  All of a sudden, I can reduce my voltage and maintain the same multiplier.  My 4.5Ghz OC only requires 1.165v now.

That could be spend on better gpu. Or something. Quiet fans.

Well, if he makes any regular income, he can always make up for that ~$45 later. Or at least, that's how I think of it. :P
