Okay, hate to break the news but it seems like either the Disk or the Logicboard of the mac is damaged. What I can recommend at the moment is that you go to an apple store or ifixit store and book an appointment to have it assessed. They will be able to tell you what is wrong and what will be needed to be done to fix the problem.

Sorry that it has come to this as I know it is a crap one to have a computer part stop working.

Best of luck.

Thanks man for all your help (I live in England) so ill probably get my mum to take it to the apple store and get it looked at - though i have heard that they are sometimes completely useless but theres no harm in trying so wish the laptop luck and

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED

how would you retrieve the data?

I dont know how to do it personally but you could ship it off to a company that can recover the data.

A friend of mine had a really great experience at the Apple Store. Those Guys know what they are doing and are usually able to help. Sometimes they do little fixes for free, you probably have to pay for the hard drive and if you don't want to pay for the expensive apple dives, they will install one that you bought yourself too.

Yeah, if everything else works, the hard drive might've died.

Option 1: reboot, hold the option key, and select 'Recovery HD', then redownload OS X

Option 2: (if it's broken): bring it to an Apple store if possible- there's a chance if make it sound like it happened out of nowhere and messed up your files, they'll sympathize. ;)

Option 3: buy a new 2.5" drive off eBay/Amazon, and use iFixit to replace it. Really simple on those, I had to do this myself!

EDIT- fuck, I'm way behind. If the Apple reps won't do it (at worst for a few bucks) you can always still replace the drive yourself. You might even get an SSD if you can swing it :D
