Hi guys, my mum has a 2011 edition macbook pro (intel core 2 duo 4gb ram etc. and I think it's running OSX mavericks) which she dropped from a table height. Now when you press the on button it makes the normal sound, displays the white backround with the apple logo and has the spinning thing right under the logo, however it seems to be stuck on this the thing just keeps spinning and nothing else seems to happen. Any ideas/recommendations are really appreciated.

Thanks

Might be the hard drive that has broken

You could try an internet recovery to reinstall OSX

If it does turn out that the hard drive is broken is there anyway to retrieve stuff off of it as she has some work documents on it

there are a few softwares you can try to recover the files:

Techtool Pro

Data Rescue

DiskDrill Pro

you will however require a second, non-dropped, working mac to do this.

in any case you'll need to remove the hard drive and place it in a external enclosure/dock first.

guide here: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Early+2011+Hard+Drive+Replacement/5119

I wouldn't get my hopes high thou, recovering files from a physically damaged HDD usually does not result in success.

If you really need the data you can send it away for recovery but prepare for that to cost between $500 and $2000

Seriously thou, OSX comes with the best backup utility called Time Machine, run that and backup your data next time.
