Hi all,

I'm planning to build a new rig for myself, that will be used mostly for gaming and programming.
The budget doesn't play much role, as long as it is reasonable performance/$.

I've made my research (and lots of thanks go to Linus for this!)

and carefully chose the following parts:

CPU
Intel Core i7 4790

I'm not planning to overclock it, from what I understand, it doesn't really makes much of a difference.

CPU Cooling

Corsair Hydro H105 240mm Extreme Performance

Since I live in a worm climate, I need a good cooling, and low noise.

Mother Board

Asus Maximus VII Hero

From what I've seen, this is a great motherboard, with great features.

RAM

G.Skill Aegis 2x8GB DDR3 1600Mhz PC3-12800 Kit CL11-11-11-28

I have no idea if the ram is good, but I get this kit for great price, and the reviews I've read on them are nice.

Graphics Card

Gigabyte Radeon R9 270X OC 4GB DDR5

In the future, I'm planning to set up 3 1080p monitors, so I need the 4GB of this card.

SSD

Samsung 840 EVO Series MZ-7TE250BW 250GB

Cheap, reliable, fast

HDD

Western Digital WD Green WD10EARS 1TB 5400 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s

That's my old HDD, which I will use for storage only. I'm not planning on upgrading it.

Case

Cooler Master CM Storm Trooper

Like the looks, big = good air flow + easy set up.
And because I've got two cats, the dust filters that the case have, will really help in preventing their fur to get into the system.

Power Supply

SeaSonic 850W Active PFC Modular 80+ Bronze M12II-850

I've calculated the money I would save on the bills if I get the 80+ Gold, and the 80+ Gold will be paid off after almost 3 years, so I went with the bronze.

I've picked the parts carefully, and each part has it reason.
I don't want bottle necks in my system, so if you can see one, please advice.

Also, this is my first build, so I may understand some things wrong, but I'm willing to learn!  ^_^

Any advice of any sort,

will be highly appreciated!!

Thanks,
Alex.

For gaming you do not need an i7, you would be good with an i5 4690K instead.

Get a R9 280x/290/290x or GTX 770/780/780ti instead, the 270x won't do good if you plan to game on all three monitors or hold out on future games very well.

Get a WD Blue or Black, not a green, greens are terribly slow.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Um why would you get a water cooler and ROG Board in your not OCing???? Like are you serious right now???

I agree.

No reason to overspend on a motherboard designed for OC'ing.

As for the passive cooling, I can support it if you are trying to go for a quiet build and have the room in your case. Otherwise, a decent fan/heatsink cpu cooler will work just fine.

Agree as well. Unless you are going to be doing cpu intensive work, most games do not use all cores equally, making the returns on getting an i7 not that great for gaming.

More games are starting to make use of more cores though, so that's a choice that you'll have to make. That's not to say that an i5 will become obsolete, just right now i7's are way overkill for gaming.

I would say go 780 if you can afford it, 770 otherwise. Might pay to wait until new Maxwell cards are released as well, as prices might drop slightly.

Also, the 270x is 2 2gb cards in crossfire. It will not help for 3 monitor setup. It would be worse than a card with 3gb vram in 1 chip. Vram is not added in crossfire/sli. 2 2gb cards = 2gb vram.

Get a i5 4690k , get a twin pack of corsair sp 120 quiet edition fans for the h105 , and I would suggest a evga FTW 780 Gpu. Also make damn sure that the h105 will fit in the case, I don't know anything about that particular case, just make sure. Also get a evga 850w gold full modular power supply.

CPU: i7 4790k OC'd @ 4.6 ghz COOLER: Corsair H105 (SP 120mm Quiet Edition Fans) MOBO: ASRock Z97 Extreme 6 RAM: Kingston Hyper Fury 16GB (2x8) 1866mhz

SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB HDD: WD Blue 1TB GPU: EVGA GTX 970 FTW 4GB PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 750w 80+ Gold Fully Modular CASE: Fractal Arc Midi R2

OPTICAL DRIVE: Samsung DVD Burner OS: Win 7 64bit   Please do some research of your own before asking questions. Google and Youtube are your friend.

Wow!
Thanks for all your replies!  :)

Yes I do.
I only need to upgrade the rig, and in the future, I'm planning to add 2 1080p monitors.

As I've said, I will be using the computer also for programming, so I do need the i7 processor.

Actually, I've tried to play on a 3 monitors setup, and I didn't really like it.
The 3 monitors setup will be used also for programming, since it really helps to set several monitors in different resolutions and test your program.

I know that the green is slow, but I'm not planning on upgrading it. All the speedy things that I'll need will be on the SSD. :)

As I've said, it's my first build, and I maybe didn't understand something right.
From what I've saw, the VII Hero has AWESOME sound card on board, reliable LAN Ethernet port and great bus speeds.

If it's an overkill, I'll be really glad to have an advice for another motherboard.

Or maybe I should consider OCing?

As I've said, I need the i7 for programming, not just gaming, so an i5 is not really an option.

About the graphics card, it is a single 4GB card, not 2x2GB crossfire.

Here is a link to the Gigabyte website: LINK

Is it still not worth it? If I should consider a higher end card, can you recommend a specific one, please?

Get a i5 4690k , get a twin pack of corsair sp 120 quiet edition fans for the h105 , and I would suggest a evga FTW 780 Gpu. As I've said, I need the core i7 for programming. So the i5 is not an option.

I've checked, and from what I've seen, the H105 comes with the SP120 fans inside the package, am I missing something?

Also, I've checked, and the H105 should easily feet in the CM Storm Trooper. Thanks for the heads up!  ;)

Why should I consider the evga FTW 780 or the evga 850W Gold power supply? Any particular reason?

Thanks again for all your replies!

I really appreciate this!  :)  :)  :)

Hi Newbie,

Well as far as the budget doesn't play much role I would suggest you to switch from Western Digital Green drive to WD Black one as the latter will actually guarantee the reasonable performance and speed for gaming and programming. The Black drives have also a 5 year warranty.

You can check for some more information on the WD Black drives by the following links: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=760 as well as compare the characteristics of different series of WD drives herehttp://www.wdc.com/ru/products/catalog/

Hope I helped.
