My friend has an incredibly powerful Nvidia GT 320 OEM (he can't even play LoL at max settings lol), the fact is now he can't play any game because when he starts a game or any gpu-intensive program, the entire pc shutdown. Looking at the temp, It was amazing, Idle: 28ºC Load: 103ºC+++(I'm sure it can even go further) so he can't play any game for more than 40 seconds. Is there any method to change the stock cooler to any other cheap one? Or maybe lowering the voltage? I've tried lowering the frequencies at core and memory, but it was an improvement of ~10 secs alive.

This is the card:

GT320-PCIE-1024-2-BULK-unit.jpg

Also at the back it has 4 screw positioned like a square, that i guess that are from the cooler

Edit: I forgot to tell that gpu cooler is at 100% when he try to play

You could try replacing the thermal compound.

Find some way to take off the cooler... It should be held onto the card using some screws...

Replace the thermal compound and clean that thing out...

or try to look for aftermarket solutions...

or make your own out of discarded stock CPU heatsinks...

Replace thermal compound, remove all dust with compressed air, and finally buy a new graphics card.

I'll try to clean and replace thermal compound.

I was looking to aftermarket gpu cooler, but I only found for high-end cards like GTX 780 and also a tiny cooler, but with 2 pins only http://www.ebay.es/itm/35mm-PC-VGA-GPU-Fan-55mm-GPU-Heatsink-Cooler-Cooling-2-Pin-12V-/181490897108?pt=UK_Computing_Video_Card_GPU_Cooling&hash=item2a41b350d4&_uhb=1

I'll check If I own and old cpu cooler

He will buy a new card for the next pc, maybe for the next year.

Can he afford to purchase a new card at the moment? It will most likely end up in his new system afterwards....

He can't, but also cpu will bottleneck and psu is only 220W. He was thinking about an GTX 760 or a r9 270x for the new system.

Hmm...

Try asking around to see if anyone has a spare GPU that he can use...

As for the CPU cooler as a GPU cooler thing, it might require some crafting skills since the mounting mechanisms are completely different...

I've changed the thermal compound and I cleaned it (It wasn't very dirty)

Sooo, now the temps playing LoL are:(minimum settings and Vsync on) 83ºC. I'll check more time, but it seems to be stable. (Vsync off is more than 90ºC)

Btw, gpu now is at ~50%, if I put medium settings, temps go further than 90ºC, so I just fast changed to low.

At least now he can play in minimum settings, but I expected normal temps, what would be the problem?

The airflow is ok, nothing especial, but i don't think it's the problem.

I'll ask to people if they have any gpu unused

And I wasn't able to find any cpu cooler to use at the gpu. What about to remove the fan (and the black plastic) and put one or two case fans to cool it? I have two 60mm fans

What res are you playing on? It might help to switch to a lower resolution if you don't mind less image quality in exchange for performance...

1920x1080, I'll check at 720p or less and see the temps.

EDIT: 720p: (minimum and Vsync on) max: 77ºC, average: 75ºC

480p: (medium and Vsync on) max: 82ºC average: 80ºC  - (minimum and Vsync on) max: 72ºC average 71ºC

At 480p is unplayable, it looks really bad.

Is it full of dirt?

Maybe the fan is not working properly or something is just faulty.

I cleaned now, changed thermal compound and fan is at 23000rpm when 100%, it's like an airport.

I think I'm missing something here. Is airport good or bad?

It's about 35dB, very noisy

Oh, now I get it. If you are trying to run really stressful things with the GPU, I bet it will be that fast(read loud)...

All that's left now is to try to get an aftermarket cooler but... well, if I were you I'd just save for a month or so and get some 6xx or even 7xx nVidia card. AMD cards are also a good option as they're cheaper.

Good luck.
