Pretty damn lousy day. Long story short I had to walk a couple blocks through a torrential downpour with my brand new $1700 Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga in my backpack. The backpack, my binder, external drive, mouse and the laptop were all soaked through. Tried to power it on once I got in class but it wouldn't power on.

Me and my teacher (IT & Linux prof) agreed that it's probably dead but to try drying it out. Right now it's sitting by my dehumidifier and I'll let it go for 48 hours before trying again.

It does not have a removable battery so I can't try that, I'm also hesitant to open it up and try anything that will void the warranty.

The warranty does not cover water damage, so I'll probably have to pay for any repairs assuming it does not come back to life in 48 hours. Any idea what that could cost me?

My teacher also mentioned that most laptops have dye-coloured tape inside that will tip Lenovo off that it was water damage if I try to claim that it "just stopped working" or something like that.

I'll be re-watching Linus's water-laptop repair vid, but does anyone else have tips or experience with Lenovo's warranty/repairs? Thanks guys.

Edit:

  • There were a few water drops on the case of the laptop, nothing on the screen or keyboard.
  • The SD card that was inserted had water on it when I took it out.
  • The USB dongle and Stylus were both dry when I took them out.

Only thing I have done with my electronics that ended up getting water on them is put them in rice. Cover them completely. That takes the water out.

I have also used a heat gun. I have only done that once and it was on a phone. But that was also after I opened it up. So I wouldn't go with that option.

If the warranty doesn't cover water damage then why bother worrying about the warranty? just rip it apart and let it dry out.

Linus made a video on this a while ago when he forgot his laptop outside and it rained.

I've been letting it dry for 24 hours so far, will try powering it up in another 24 hours, the wait is nauseating :(

Well after letting it dry for about 50 hours I tried to turn it on and nothing happened. Tried it with the power brick plugged in, nothing.

But then, after I gave up I was flipping through the manual to see what it would be like to take it apart when I noticed they included a little CMOS reset hole on the back of it. Grabbed a tiny tiny screwdriver, penetrated that hole and sure enough it powers on and is working like a champ now!

Very relieved :)
