I recently built my first computer and the wifi speed that it is getting seems WAY slower than it should be. I have a macbook pro that gets 120 Mbps download and 23.3 Mbps upload as determined by speedtest.net, but from the same location my new gaming PC gets just 25 Mbps download and 2.6 Mbps upload. I put a TPI-Link TL-WDN4800 PCI-express wifi adapter <http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704133> in the PC, and its supposed to get up to 450 Mbps.

I installed the drivers for the card and I've run both the windows diagnostic/repair utility and the TPI utility but I can't seem to fix my problem. If I look at the wireless network connection in control panel it says I'm getting 216 Mbps, but that's obviously not the case.

In a practical test, I downloaded the same game from steam on my MacBook and my new PC. The new PC took 4-5 times longer.

Does anyone have any thoughts? I'm a lifelong Mac user and I've only recently begun to use a windows machine in my daily life, so is there just something about setting up a wireless connection with windows that I don't know? Or are there other things I can do to diagnose my problem? Thanks in advance.

I may have experienced the same problem before switching to ethernet. It may be a weak signal through a wall from the router, or the router is set to a different channel/setting (bg, b, g) try switching channels around. I usually go to 192.168.1.1 on the web adress to acsess my router settings. Sometimes ethernet is just easier and dosent put grey hairs on my head. Linus has some videos on wifi "enhancement" you should search up. Good luck, hope it helps.

is your router 5 Ghz capable?

I don't know if Macbooks use 5 GHz bands (because, like you with windows, I am clueless to Macs), but perhaps that could help a bit more since 5 Ghz is a whole new frequency, which makes it faster and more flexible

I agree it sounds like the MacBook might have connected with the 5 GHz band and your computer is going to the 2.4 GHz, also make sure the antennas on your network adapter are attached well. Might also want to see if ping times are similar between the two computers.
