integrated graphics vs dedicated gpu

Can someone link me to an article that explains how and when the graphics card kicks in?  Is there a point at which the integrated graphics can't handle the workload anymore and tell the gpu to help, or does it assign tasks to the gpu?  I'm just curious and I can't find anything by googling.  I've always wondered if they work together, or how it works exactly.

They don't work together. You hook your monitor up with your GPU or your iGPU. Simple as that.

I'm pretty sure the Intergrated Graphics are shut off completely and the Dedicated GPU does all of the work.

Most of the time, if you have a dedicated GPU, it will just use that and the iGPU won't be doing much of anything. You can configure things to run off the iGPU and others off the graphics card, but most of the time it's not really worth it.

I'm not too sure about desktop computing, but as far as I can tell with my laptop, it will always try to use the integrated graphics to conserve power.  However, it has a list of applications (from the Nvidia Control Panel) that will use the dedicated graphics to run.  For instance, games exclusively run via the dedicated GPU, and for some programs I have had to change the settings to force it to switch from iGPU to GPU.  (Autodesk Inventor)

A dedicated GPU does everything, and the integrated graphics shuts off.

If you plug your monitor into your GPU it will use the GPU to process all the graphics stuff, if you plug the monitor into the motherboard it will use the IGPU.
