They can't.

 

Unless your 290 is one of the early versions that can be unlocked to a 290X (done with a BIOS flash) it's not possible.

Uhh you can't crossfire a r9 290x with a r9 290. You can only crossfire from a r9 290x to a r9 290x and r9 290 to a r9 290, it has to be the same architecture to crossfire. game debate has a list of crossfire gpu's

ehh the 290 can crossfire with the 290X

 

Crossfire is not like SLi where you need the same GPU

In that article it says you can crossfire different gpu's. The strongest card though is only as strong as its weakest link.

CrossFire will work with the same family of GPU 290 with 290x will work

 

the only thing will happen is the 290X will match the speed of the 290

So I have enabled crossfire in the catalyst control center and on boot up my 290x will run until it reaches the windows desktop. Any ideas?

so did you enabled crossfire?

 

in GPU-Z it should say CrossFire enabled and 2 GPUs running

290 can work with 290X

 

same goes for 270 and 270x and 280 and 280x
