Windows XP era I couldn't allow it to auto update.

But Windows 7 and 8.1 are on auto update.

I always do automatic updates... even on linux, why it should be bad?

Sometimes it doesn't get installed properly

Semi-auto update, auto updates the important security updates then I take a look at what else is available like the optional updates.

I have it so it tells me about updates, but it doesn't Download or install them. Just make sure to leave automatic updates on if your using Windows 8 windows defender, it rely on windows update for its virus signature updates

I have it set to Notify Only, but I install them all as soon as it pops up every month, I don't have Microsoft Updates enabled that's what gives you the Bing bloat, I always end up installing them all and by doing them manually I can just take 10 mins out to install them when it's convenient compared to shut down taking longer later on.

If it's a legal copy of windows I let it update when it wants to.

If it isn't, I don't enable windows update.

Although I generally stick to legal copies of windows now.

Windows updates always cause stability and performance issues. They also eat drive space for little to no reason. If you're connected directly to the internet then I would suggest doing them. However if you connect through an access point Windows updates are just pointless.
