Some good starter anime shows/movies (imo):

Anime Movies

Princess Mononoke or Howl's Moving Castle - Studio Ghibli

Redline or Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door - High quality animation with good everything else

5 Centimeters per Second or Summer Wars - Love stories with a twist (though the two movies are very different in tone, i.e. one is sad while the other is happy-go-lucky)

Sword of the Stranger or Karas: The Prophecy/Revelation - Epic action. Truly epic.

 

Anime Series

Tiger & Bunny or A Certain Magical Index - Super powas & semi-serious with unique themes

Black Lagoon or Hellsing - Dark themes & gorey

Trigun or Cowboy Bebop - Sci-Fi Classics (as of the 90's anyway)

Kill la Kill or Kaiba - Wild Cards (in so many ways)

Kaicho wa Maid-sama or Ouran Highschool Host Club - Romance Comedy

Haha though I hold Hyouka in very high regard I know its not for everyone.

I've heard of Boku no Pico a lot, but I always imagined it (based purely on it's name) to be something like Fruit Basket. 

I'm never going to Google it and generally avoid Boku no Pico so I can never know how wrong I am.

Look up "yaoi" and "shotacon". Combine those two with "hentai" and there you go.

 

I forgot about Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei. It's a wacky anime that mocks society.

 

There's Samurai Champloo, Yu Yu Hakusho, Afro Samurai, Burst Angel, Black Lagoon, Darker than Black, Hellsing, the Devil May Cry and Bayonetta anime; and Cowboy Bebop if you want action-y anime. Spiral and Case Closed are good detective, mystery anime. Speed Grapher is an anime about corruption, disturbing fetishes, and how we're all messed up in some way to an extreme. i guess Elfen Lied would be similar... Watch Welcome to the NHK if you want an anime about our anxieties, society's pressures, and stuff like that.

 

There's Tamako Market too! A sweet anime. It's sweet and fluffy and that's all there too it.

As cheesy as that line in Hanasaku Iroha was it was a good series. The movie was good too.
