Please note that pcpartpicker didn't list the 2x4GB version of the ram you picked, so I selected the 1333MHz one, it's here just as price reference.

In general, my opinion is that this build is pretty unbalanced if the main use will be gaming (and as htpc), I think you could invest your money better.

Going from top to bottom of the list: is the 3570K really that necessary? if the most cpu instensive process you are going to do is playing you will find that the gpu you picked will get in the way before you could utilize said processor at its maximum. You could easily pick something like the 3470 without loosing almost anything gaming wise and save some extra money by picking an h77 motherboard and dishing the cpu cooler.

Do you actually need 2 HDD and 1 SSD? you could just use a single HDD and SSD and save a little bit more. (for your budget I would not pick an SSD but that's my personal opinion).

The GPU is my main concern, for the moment I'll skip over it and talk about it at the end.

The PSU is pretty good, in the list above I picked the modular one because it was just 10$ more. Other than that, I find it to be kinda big for a single gpu setup (unless you are using a 7970), especially considered the hardware you picked so far. I will change it for this particular reason, not because the seasonic one is bad (it's pretty damn good actually). the XFX core edition is actually manufactured by seasonic and it's pretty cheap considered how good it is so it's my main suggestion, the only issue is that it isn't modular.

Now let's focus back on the GPU: you said that one of the main use will be gaming, so with this is mind (and with all we saved) I'm going to suggest a Sapphire 7950, thanks to it you will going to play most games at maximum quality with over 30fps (and even 60 depending from the game), this particular gpu can also be overclocked a LOT and if you do so can trade hits with a 670 OCed. If you buy from newegg it also comes with 4 games included. If for whatever reason you prefer Nvidia you can pick a 660Ti instead for a similar price, but note that it will come with just 1 game for free.

To sum everything up, these are the changes I would made:

CPU:  Intel Core i5-3470 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($185.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard:  Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H ATX  LGA1155 Motherboard  ($84.99 @ Newegg)
Storage:  Samsung 840 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  ($89.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card:  Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card  ($289.99 @ Newegg)
Case:  Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case  ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive:  Sony AD-7280S-0B DVD/CD Writer  ($27.87 @ Amazon)
Total: $921.79

Yeah it seems good, probably going to play at medium/high settings depending on the game, but theres haswell coming out soon ( CPU's that ll replace the 3570k and all that which was also be a bit better for same amount of money )

Why do you need 2 different HDDs? If you arent captuting gameplay then 1TB will be enough, and with the money you save from that HDD you can get a better graphics card!

Hey there. You are looking mighty fine today, have my virtual cookie!

Everything is fine, but if you are building a gaming computer, I would put more of the budget into the graphics card.

650 ti will play the latest games not all on high settings, but with your budget you can cut back a bit on some things spend more the the GPU and play the latest games at the highest settings.

If it were my build: cut out the WD Caviar Green, spend the savings on getting a better GPU (7950, or 660 ti or better)

Yeah it's fine. The 650ti boost does alright at 1080p but you may want to boost it up to another card (7870) though it would cost a lot more.

In the UK, if you're lucky the 7870 is about £30 more so in terms of dollars it's probably in your range.

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?

It depends on your priorities.

Typical "pure" gaming PC ~$1200-$1500 (my guess at your budget) will use a 7950 or 650ti

If you are also building for HTPC, storage becomes more important and is worth spending money on.

My PC uses a 6870 and I play the games I want at high settings. So far though I haven't played the latest most graphically demanding titles. (I have played Diablo III, Starcraft II, Crysis (original), Civ 5 ...)

It is my estimation that your PC is built to be able to play games well, and balance that off with a good chunk of storage. Now my question is: Is 3 hard drives the way to go? Might it be more economical to go with 2? (SSD + 2 TB WD Blue maybe?). Reducing complexity is usually a good thing.

first of all, you need a 400 watt PSU to run a 650 ti and a 3570k.

Save on the power supply and get a better graphics card. Get a 660 or 660 ti and a 450 watt PSU.

I'd also go for an H77 motherboard and no aftermarket cooler and spend more on the graphics. The Extreme4 isn't great, and the money would be better spent on graphics.

what if i plan to overclock the cpu and the gpu ever so slightly ........

what is the best wattage of a psu i might be looking at considering some room for future upgrades.

There is no way you are going to use more than 400 watts with an i5 and 650 ti, even if you oveclock them both very heavily.

You are much better off getting a cheaper power supply now and a better graphics card than good PSU and a cheap graphics card. Expandability is nice, but when you're buying a graphics card that's that cheap, expandability should be second to buying something better in the first place.

My rig has a 6-core 3930K and a 7970 and it pulls about 650 watts from the wall running both Prime95 and Furmark at the same time overclocked.

At the moment I´m running Folding@home on full on two computers and they pull 840 watts together from the wall including 2 monitors.

The other rig is a quadcore Q6600 with 2 6850´s.
