Another PSU Thread...

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

Gahhhh! Won't a CPU overclocked draw at least 100+ watts of power as well?

I feel rude for questioning you but 372w (from gpu) + lets say 125w (from cpu) that's nearly 500w of power. Isn't that a bit much for a 550w PSU?

Also thank you for the power draw benchmarks. I had no idea those existed and will be researching into them more.

372w is the power draw of the entire system tested and not the graphics card alone.

I'm going to start out and apologize for making this thread but it would be really nice to get some input from more seasoned PC builders.

I'm currently planning my first PC and I'm assembling all the parts that I need to get going. I've finalized most of the parts that I am ready to buy but I need some PSU advice. I currently have a 660w Seasonic platinum PSU but it costed me a whopping $145 and I just don't see the $50 benefit of using this over a $100 semi-modular gold PSU. I will be buying a GTX 880 instead of the 780ti and read that the GTX 880 will be more power efficient compared to the 700 series so I thought 660w would be a bit overkill for my build. I began looking at the 550w Seasonic G series PSUs and they seem like a good buy but after checking some calculators and reading about how PSUs should only be around 80-90% load for best performance would a 550w be enough to power this build along with overclocking? I don't plan on SLI but I do plan on having some PCIe capture cards and lots of USB devices that will suck power. Also should I be worried about capacitor aging/wear?

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-120g10650xr IMO 650W is the sweetspot for pricing and you can use it in future builds.

That's going to be trucking on thin ice. I assume you are going to overclock that I7?

It will definitely be worth getting a decent 650W. That will give you some leeway.

Thanks for the quick replies!

and oops! Yes I do plan on overclocking the CPU. I meant to put that in the original post.

It seems like a 650w PSU would be a healthy investment and I will go ahead and go for it. Could anyone elaborate on capacitor wear or should I not be worried about that when buying from good brands?

yea I heard it was a very good PSU which is why I bought it but I've noticed that PSUs are a very popular item that often gets discounted and since I'm still in the return window, I wanted to go ahead and save some money.

The 550 G is more than enough.

That's going to be trucking on thin ice.

Not at all. The system barely pulls under 450w at load. http://www.anandtech.com/show/7492/the-geforce-gtx-780-ti-review/15

Oh, my mistake. I skimmed and read that he/she has plans to SLI.

Thanks for that.
