Hi,

I have a question about the turbo,

from what i understand turbo is when it throttles the CPU higher then its stock clock speed. is this at Load as well as idle?

from what i think the turbo should throttle up when im using it and stay around stock when not using it or even throttle down

with my CPU (AMD 8120) it throttles way up to like 4.6 sometimes when idling changing the FSB the multiplier, the NB frequency

so why is this backwards or am i just so tired atm thats its ment to be like that?

so is this a

sorry if you dont understand what i mean ive been working on assignments all day

**EDIT**

I Have a Asus Sabertooth 990fx with version 1604 bios ( came with 1100 or something when i first bought it)

Cheers

Chris

Have you changed the BIOS settings at all? Also, what motherboard do you have?

Alright. So have any BIOS settings been changed?

i have changed the sata config to raid, ive resetted it within the last 2-3 days but the features like AMD cool and quiet didnt change, i dont remember off the top of my head what they were but cool and quiet was disabled

also i tend to change the NB frequency to 2200 to stop it jump around, and set my ram speeds to 1600 and thats about it

** under cpu-z it says 16.5

Does it always go up to 4.6GHz?

Disable turbo core and any power saving settings(temporarily). See what happens.

Weird. Just disable those things, and see what happens. I had this same thing happen to me. I used to own an 8120.

i know if i disable the turbo is sits at a constant mhz rate to whatever its set at. i know i suppose i could do this, but the point i wanna know is why is the turbo 'backwards'

I have no idea.

do u think i could RMA it and get a replacement

It might be a simple fix. May not actually be anything wrong with the CPU. Perhaps a couple BIOS settings.

cool n quiet plus turbo core plus asus power tune would cause this ... u have no problems mate. Check your temps first of all. Once they do not go over 70 degrees celsius, fire up an intensive application (game, some converter, a stress test, even windows index score ). While the intensive application is running then  look at cpu speeds, voltages and temps. Report back what you see.

if it's never been done then i'm probably tryna do it. (((((((Bass so low it HERTZ)))))))

oh and about the word throttle that means to back down on speed in an effort to protect the hardware (correct me if i am wrong though), so using it to say that your cpu clocks up to 4.6ghz and  has a varying cpu speed could be wrong or at least confusing.

well my cpu never goes over 60 degrees, ive uninstalled all the asus crap because im sure that program everytime i boot it, it would load the profile for over clocks.

atm i disabled APM and all the other CPU configurations, now it doesnt throttle at all, sits at 3.8ghz with a vcore around 1.260v

but the multiplier is at 15.5 and my bus speed is 250 :S

so when i run prime95  clockspeed doesnt change and temps doesnt go over 40c, which is really odd usually its around 50 with prime going

*EDIT*

now bus speed is going 270, i thought max was 250?

That's odd that the bus speed is at 250MHz. I had three AMD CPUs, and the bus speed was at 200MHz. Could be a motherboard thing.
