why did you choose this one? is there a special reason that makes it stand out?

Single threaded applications perform better on it especially if you overclock it. Multi-tasking will slow it down a lot however because it is only two cores.

It can be overclocked pretty well.

Pretty well is an understatement. If it weren't for the voltages, because the temps are so low you could probably get these to 5GHz.

whats the difference between the 760k and the 750k

100MHz base clock. You can take a 750k and overclock it to 760k speeds and save money.

It really depends on your personal preference and your use case:

FX6300 has 6 cores, so it's good for gaming and workstation applications.

The Athlon has slightly better single core performance, but it has only 4 cores.

The G3258 has amazing single-core performance if it's overclocked, but if you compare it in gameplay performance to the FX6300 it won't match up simply because of the number of cores.

Single-core performance is not an effective way to make up for the number of cores, and games nowadays typically require 4 cores.

Remember to be a good citizen and choose a 'best answer' when your problem has been resolved!

(that way people know when a problem's been resolved)

Just my opinion, it's neither right or wrong.

I would go for the Pentium over the 6300. Reason is, if you ever want to upgrade your CPU again you have the option of getting an i5 (if you're only gaming and video editing) or an i7 (if you're doing heavy video editing and/or professional rendering). The main upside is you can overclock the peepee out of the G3258 and be good with nearly every game.

While the 6300 has more cores and would be arguably more "future proof" for gaming and just as good an overclocker, no one really knows for sure if more cores will equal more performance in future games rather than Intel's better single-core performance. The upgrade options leave you with the 8-core FX CPU's which are close to/match the performance of an i5/i7 in games.

Either way you'll be good to go, but I would go for the Intel chip since Intel is just better overall.

The Pentium G3258 Anniversary edition is not only OVERCLOCKABLE, but it is also UNLOCKED.

In gaming, it's on par with the i7-4790K.

I'd go for a 6300 and overclock with a good cooler. If you can't get a good cooler, get yourself the Pentium as that has more upgradability and more room for a good OC'ing cooler.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

whats the difference between overclockable and unlocked

unlocked basically means you can overclock much, much more than a normal cpu.

other overclockable cpus (that aren't unlocked) don't have as dramatic of a boost.

basically, with an unlocked processor, you can overclock it as high as you want as long as it's still stable.

*When the game is limited to 2 cores.

Keep in mind it's still a dual core processor. If a game is designed to operate using 4 or more cores the G3258 is not the optimal choice and falls behind quite a bit. It makes a good stand in for now as many games do not require more than 2 cores.

This is true.  Sorry, I forgot about that.

The best cooler for cheap OC'ing in my opinion is the Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro 7 Rev 2. Great stuff for the same price as Hyper 212 EVO which is a sleeve cooler which isn't necessarily as good as a fluid dynamic cooler like the Arctic. The best mobo's for OC'ing are all high priced but a good mobo for the Pentium is an MSI B85M G43. For the 6300, an ASUS M5A97 R2.0 is good.

How do you overclock on the b85? I have been told you need to change the bios with a different Cpu. What kind of mobos do you need to oc the fx

There's too many different ones for the FX for overclocking. The R2.0 is as cheap as it'll get for solid overclocking. The Pentium should overclock on it's own (not needing another CPU lying around is what I mean). The BIOS is where all the worries about overclocking should happen. I know that Luke made a video on the LTT YouTube channel about the Pentium and Devil's Canyon and overclocking them.
