Recommended downloads for Windows 8.1

Hello everyone,

 

I was just wondering what are some recommended things to download for a new user to windows 8.1 to make it a little better of a UI experience. I've seen people make their start screen all fancy and such but I have no clue how to work that yet.

Classic Shell - It's free, has more features than most paid for software, and works very well. 

I've used it for over 10 months on Windows 8.

I agree with Vitalius, Classic Shell is amazing. It also has tons of customization.

ohh and classic shell is good idea and if you're into making your desktop look nice you can also use rainmeter

Why 8.1 is way better

Its true though, from personal experiance, If you already have 7 its hard to argue its worth upgrading, but if you are buying a new OS its hard to recommend the old

Just kidding I hope its not a pile of shit, but its windows so it will be. I want apple to a new full size mac pro, and for them to partner with steam to get full game support

 

If only :(

 

Or for linux to get more support

No I do not really have much to say, its faster and smoother, that is really all I can say. It seems more stable and reliable and it just seems to give a smoother faster nicer experiance

I still hate "Modern UI" so I have that disabled through Start8

 

I planned to upgrade to Windows 8 on launch but then I saw that and it put me off, I know there are ways around that of course but I still can't see the advantage for my uses of browsing, gaming and media consumption.

 

The work and editing programs I use all run fine on 7.

As much as I like 8.1 and its speed I have systems on 7 and I just cba upgrading for the slight benefits it has

And I concur with that sentiment, I'm staying on 7 for the time being, when W9 launches I will assess the situation and upgrade to one or the other as I'm sure that Microsoft will be witholding the newest D3D API from 7.

If OSX was available on disc from Apple to run on my PC I'd own a copy to try it out, but I don't want to spend on another entire machine for one operating system whether it's a hackintosh or an actual Mac.

 

I might not even like the OS.

Yeah its a shame its not, but understandable why. I really do like OSX as an OS, I just cannot 100% use it because I like gaming too much, if I was not a gamer I would be 100% an apple user......(sorry forum)

 

I need a machine dedicated to photo and video editing, and since I plan on getting a new laptop I think a 15 rMBP will do a great job for me, plus I prefer OSX for browsing, documents etc etc , keep that as work and keep my desktop as play

If one is using 7 on a desktop, there is no improvement in 8.1 to even bother making that transition.

I agree, if you already using Windows 7 there is not THAT much benefit of going to 8.1

 

although 8,1 is faster, i do find it runs smoother and more stable than windows 7
