as long you dont get the reference design

the gpu which uses the tri fan design like the Tri-X will run cooler than the stock AMD cards

the Asus direct CU II 280x and 290x cards some of them had an issue with the cooler, and the AMD reference coolers are absolutley dreadful.

Though if you get any Sapphire card you can be assured the temps will be perfectly fine.  If you want the best cooler like the BEST cooler the sapphire Vapor X is the best of the best and keeps things really cool.

So I'm getting my first amd graphics card, but there's a lot of talk about the heat and temps, is it anything to worry about and what are some good ways to keep it cool?

Sapphire and MSI have very good coolers for AMD. Go with those

RIG: I7-4790k @ 4.5GHz | MSI Z97S SLI Plus | 12GB Geil Dragon RAM 1333MHz | Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX 970 (1550MHz core/7800MHz memory) @ +18mV(Maxed out at 1650/7800 so far) | Corsair RM750 | Samsung 840 EVO 120GB, 1TB Seagate Barracuda | Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Closed) | Sound Blaster Z                                                                                                                        Getting: Noctua NH-D15 | Possible 250GB Samsung 850 Evo                                                                                        Need a console killer that actually shits on every console? Here you go (No MIR/Promo)

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

Anything other than the reference cooler design will be fine, just find one that fits your build and/or budget.

I'm getting the msi card so that should be okay?

It will be fine, the MSI Gaming cooler is quite good.

Also next time remember to Quote or mention the person you are responding to, that way they get a notification.

Reference style coolers are good at blowing the heat outside of your case, however they tend to be a little warmer and noiser than most aftermarket coolers.

Aftermarket coolers will typically give you better temps and noise levels but will dump a fair amount of heat into your case, just make sure you have sufficent airflow in your case and you should be fine.

Everybody is correct, reference coolers especially on the 290/290x's are not very good at cooling, they will run up to their thermal limit (95c) consistantly in gaming, this means thermal throttling which decreases performance a bit (although not as bad as some people say) the reference designs are also very loud.

In saying all of that, I have an ex-mining reference 290 that I have pushed to the limit over and over and it sits at 94c for very long periods of gaming sessions sometimes and it still hasnt missed a beat.

These Hawaii gpu's in the 290/290x can stand up to some huge punishment in terms of tempertures, so honestly, the temps are high, but its designed to take it and still be reliable.

However, if you just want to avoid all that heat and noise you can just buy a good non-reference 290/290x like the Tri-X, Vapor-X or PCS+ and then you'll be all sorted (all of those will stay below 80c).

This video shows the difference between a 'reference 290' and a 'non-reference tri-x 290'.
