By the time the headphone is used and is "burned in" you've looooong forgotten what the headphone sounded like exactly from before it was burned in, your head gets used to the sound signature thus further blurring the picture, not to mention placebo.

Ear cushion break-in probably has more real-world impact but of course nobody mentions that because it's not sexy to talk about foam getting manky.

I concur, though there may or may not be a negligible amount of mechanical break down.

I think the most important part is our short auditory memory. We forget how something sounded EXACTLY in a matter of seconds. And it's not something we can write down to remember, either.
