What exactly is "eSATA"?

externalSATA, used for external HDDs. Basically external SATA II.

just wanting to know what exactly "eSATA" is as far as i know its an external Serial-ATA connector i would like a straight up answer and not a link to wikipedia.

Full speed SATA designed to be used outside the machine. It has an issue of not providing power however.

Normandy - Intel Core i5 3470, 8 GB Corsair Vengenace LP, EVGA GTX 960 SSC, Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP, WD Blue 1 TB, Seagate 320 GB (steam), Seagate 320 GB (experimental, second OS, etc), Windows 8.1 + Ubuntu 14.10

A lot of different External HDDs have eSATA connectors on them, as some cases, motherboards and expansion cards have the connector on them as well for interface.

This of course was fixed with eSATAp, which the ports also serve as USB ports.

I am not sure really. Plenty of companies use it, but not extensively.
