R9 290, but which one?

Hi everyone,
so as the topic says im not sure which R9 290 should i get.

Iam more towards the XFX R9 290 DD (280pounds) but is it worth payin the extra money and getting XFX R9 290 Black Edition DD(320pounds) ?
i chose this card because of the price and the look of it, it looks really elegant and it suits the case that im getting (NZXT H440) + lifetime warranty

or maybe its not worth getting the XFX at all, and maybe going with asus, msi, saphire, gigabyte is a better option (they are around 300-320 pounds)

what are your thoughts guys, any help will be appreciated :)

Thanks  :)

XFX is known to have a poor track record in the warranty/RMA category, and not to mention that their Double Dissipation cooler is sub-par compared to the other R9 290s. Gigabyte, MSI and Sapphire are my choices.

The Sapphire Tri-X cooler is the best cooler for the R9 290 from what I've read so I'd get that one.

It's cheaper than the XFX, and is a better cooler. Go figure :)

This came out a few mins before you posted this topic, I guess it's worth a watch if you're considering buying that card.

get the stock r9 290 for hawt temps. loljk.

If i was buying an R9 290, i'd go for the Sapphire Tri-X, the cooler on that thing is actually decent. Or.... go for Gigabyte, or MSI for better overclocking with good cooling.

Love my Tri-X! It is fairly quiet in my small system, very quiet in my brother's HAF XB.

Performance shouldn't be too different between all those cards (except the ref card which will throttle probably).

If you want to step up and pay a little bit more, go for the VAPOR-X by Sapphire, very similar to the TRI-X but even thicker and quieter! ->OC anyone???

If you have the space and the money, the VAPOR-X would be the card I would get.

I can't say much about their mobos but I had most of my GPUs from them over the years and all were good quality.

X1950 (we bought three of those),HD5770 (bought two of those), HD6870 (bought one), and now the R9 290 (also bought two). GPUs are probably their strongest side. ;-)

we had a am3 mobo and everything lagged around, games had max. 20fps although the gpu is very good, sometimes the pc just crashed at easy tasks, we thought the cpu was the problem, so we bought another one --> same problem, and then we bought an athlon 760k and fm2+ a88x mobo and now everything works just fine

I am pretty sure the R9 290 Vapour-X is the only 290 above the Tri-X. You might want to look into that.

That's interesting because I have to admit I looked at one of their mobos once for a friend......good to know! Great input! Thank you!

if you don't care about a blue pcb and live in canada, this is a fairly low price for a decent card.

that being said, most of the aftermarket coolers are close in performance and sound. customer support not so much.

I just read a review that put the DD higher than the MSI TF. Slightly louder, but 18C cooler.

XFX don't do lifetime UK warranty.

Get either of the following:

- PwerColour PCS+ from OCUK, it comes with a free 8gb 2400mhz RAM kit, the cooler itself is great (as good as Tri-x). £305

- MSI R9 290x - £336 at OCUK, limited stock.

- Sapphire Tri-x for £280 at Aria.

OCUK handles all RMA stuff so you'll never have to deal with PowerColour's shitty service yourself. Free ram is decent too.

That is AWESOME information, thank you alot and the rest for their help and opinions, really appreciated.

this PCS+ with the free ram for ONLY 305£ is REALLY tempting :D

but can i fit the 2400mhz ram into the Asus sabertooth 990fx R2.0 on the website is says "4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz ECC, Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory

Dual Channel Memory Architecture " will it even work ? i know i wont notice any difference between 1333 and 1866 ram but if i get the 2400 for free i will obviously change from my 1600.

and the powercolour card look in my opinion is better than tri-x.

thanks :)

You're maybe better making another thread about that because I'm not entirely sure, but I would say it's fine.

When you use memory faster than what your mobo can run at then you can downclock it in the bios to 1866, or you might be able to run it at 1600mhz and keep your other kit of ram (if it's 2x4gb sticks).

Worst case scenario you flog the ram for like £40 and have a great card at a great price :)

I'm building next month and the PowerColour card is probably the one I'm going for so long as pricing vs Tri-x/Vapour-X and 290x suits :P
