There is something I've wondered for quite some time. I don't get it when companies release the same card with with a slight overclock like EVGA's SC cards or for example TRI-X and TRI-X OC. I have seen multiple companies do it. To me its seems like the exact same card just with an overclock. In that case why don't people just buy the basic card and overclock it? Am I just going crazy is there actually something physically different

Something i see here in Switzerland is the price is just 2-10$ different.

But now the prices from the SC cards jumps to 100$ difference and comes in some weeks back to 30$ difference but yeah maybe it could be that.

Or some people don't know how to OC a Gpu and then they buy the SC versions

OC cards are binned, meaning you can be 100% sure that they will be stable at the frequency they advertise. Not all gpus can overclock the same. Where I live the prices aren't that different, in fact I found an oc edition that was cheaper than the standard one.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I actually owned an EVGA GTX 660 SC, it ran faster than the FTW with mine having a boost clock average of 1187Mhz(if I remember correctly) in most games, 1208Mhz in fewer, and in some cases 1212Mhz(Unstable). Note - the first two are stable frequencies that actually vary per game. And, I changed the fan curve a bit. Boost clock is said to jump with good temperatures. I don't have a screenshot of it though before I sold it :(

Finished Crysis without a discrete GPU,15 FPS average, and a lot of heart

How I plan my builds -

Spoiler

For me I start with the "There's no way I'm not gonna spend $1,000 on a system."

Followed by the "Wow I need to buy the OS for a $100!?"

Then "Let's start with the 'best budget GPU' and 'best budget CPU' that actually fits what I think is my budget."

Realizing my budget is a lot less, I work my way to "I think these new games will run on a cheap ass CPU."

Then end with "The new parts launching next year is probably gonna be better and faster for the same price so I'll just buy next year."

Its the cooler, EVGA actually sells one of the most expensive cards out there.

Sapphire is pretty good with custom coolers. You should read reviews about the reference R9 290X and the difference between Sapphire's own R9 290X Toxic. It's pretty mouth watering...except for the extreme jet engine from the reference design R9 290/290X.

..... I don't think you get it. No it's not the cooler evga actually sells cards with the acx cooler and cards that are SC with the acx cooler here is an example take from their site

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB w/ EVGA ACX Cooler

EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB SC w/ EVGA ACX Cooler

They literally sell cards that just have an oc and now I know its because there binned

You should have clarified this on your first post. Your comment about Tri-X, etc., made us think the other way.

They're selling the cards that are already OC'ed to people who don't like to OC themselves but would like to have a card that's faster than others. Anyway, I wouldn't recommend the OC'ed only cards.
