My current Net Browsing system has:

Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz 1 Core

1 GB DDR3 RAM

Some Unknown Motherboard

OnBoard Graphics

40 GB HDD

Can this PC run Windows 8 fine just browsing net and playing online games ? Storage space is not required so Windows can take upto 30 GB and only the rest is required for me. Thanks.

It will probably run really slow and you would need to install the 32 bit version, i suggest get a dual core or faster.

Why ? Will it not run 64 bit ?

don't you see this, You only have 1 gb of ram which isn't enough for 64 Bit

That's not a problem. My friend runs it fine on 1 GB but is slow though. Currently my XP install is so old and is filled and is also slow.

Did you not see the requirement of 2GB RAM for 64-Bit?

Microsoft system specs is to get the OS running. Not to have a smooth experience

Basically, it will work if you are very patient, but have a great experience.

To have a smooth and great experience you need:

-> True dual or more core CPU

-> 2GB of RAM dual channel, for 32-bit version of Windows

-> 256MB of video memory (assuming you run 1080p, if less, then 128MB might be OK, if you limit your windows being opened)

-> GPU must support Pixel Shader 2.0

-> GPU must be DirectX 9 compatible, and have WDDM drivers

-> 7200RPM SATA HDD with NCQ support.

-> SATA controller set to AHCI mode (or RAID if you have one)

TO get Windows 8 running, you have the CPU, and memory. You can manage to make it run.

The problem is the GPU, as the Start Screen and modern UI apps are all GPU rendered.

To run a 64bit OS you need a CPU that can run 64bit if that P4 CPU supports 64bit then you're probably fine, if it doesn't then you will have to use a 32bit version. You can either Google your CPU number or post it here, but if it is this one then you are 32bit only.
