WTF is Push/pull?

Go to solution Solved by TheMcSame,

This should sum it up quite easily.

Push-Pull-config.png

Using a set of fans on each side of the radiator/heat sink, one pushing air through, the other pulling it through.

Push/pull isn't necessary unless you are using a thick or high fin-density radiator. Push vs pull has no cooling difference, but pull is the way to go, it leaves a radiator easier to clean (no dust getting stuck between the fans and the rad) and is quieter than push.

It's when you have fans on both the top and bottom of the radiator. One of them pushes the air through, the other pulls it, thus increasing airflow.

Push is the fan that is pushing air into the rad, pull is what pulls the air out

I've heard people say they've had their rad or whatever in a push/pull config. What is push, pull and push/pull? BTW, it's in air cooling because I think it's to do with fans. Also, which ones better?

Push/pull is when you have 1 fan on each side of the radiator, one fan blowing air through the rad (pushing air) and the other sucking air through the rad (pulling air)

Push is when you have 1 fan BLOWING air through the radiator.

Pull is when a fan is SUCKING air through the radiator.

This also applies to air cooling when you swap the rad for a heatsink.

push pull has the best performance, but ovbiously is louder because its double the amount of fans.

Having fans in front of the resistive object (radiator, heatsink etc) is push, and having fans behind the object is pull. Combining them in a push pull configuration will increase airflow through the object and thus, if it's a heat dissipating object, will result in better cooling performance.
