bent pins = fried cpu?

Go to solution Solved by FizzyFantom,

"Extremely fragile" seems a slight exaggeration (to me at least). I wouldn't worry about installing the CPU, they're very similar to AMD in the end. Make sure it's the right way around then drop it carefully into place. it doesn't matter too much if you "drag" the CPU a little bit, the pins aren't awfully easy to bend, and the CPU is designed to sit on the plastic around the edges so shouldn't actually bend the pins far enough to break them alone.

Just a word of warning, Intel CPUs tend to make a little "crunch" sound when pushing the retention arm down (not when installing the CPU), this is normal and nothing to worry about.

Take it easy and you will be fine, PC components are made pretty solidly nowadays ;)

EDIT: READ THE LAST POST AS WELL BEFORE YOU REPLY.

So, in my other thread (link here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/193459-how-to-install-intel-1150-cpu/) I was worried about placing an Intel Haswell CPU into a Z97-A motherboard in case I bend any pins (because apparently they are very fragile) and now i've been reading that if you try and fix the bent socket pin on your mobo and start your pc with the cpu in the socket, apparently it can FRY your cpu, this is now making me SUPER WORRIED about placing my gorgeous 4690K into my new mobo :( is that true?^^

Putting a bent pin back straight will not fry your board..it just COULD fry your board

I would try and get the motherboard replaced or fixed before attempting anything

Just be gentle.  If you're careful you'll be fine.  As long as none of the pins touch each other, you'll be fine :D

this makes me very worried tho, I have never installed an Intel CPU before, only AMD. So if my board gets fried, do I have to waste another $140 on another board ?

Intel has the pins on the motherboard i think and not on the CPU itself, so your fine.

You'll be fine, the installation is very similar.  Plus Linus did a video on how to do it.

well just place it on the socket nice and flat and not touch the pins... easy.  I mean i have only installed AMD CPUs but i think you would have a higher chance of bending a pin of a AMD CPU then a Intel.

I have bent an amd pin before, and the cpu was for my personal rig. but it works because I bent it back to place. But Intel's 1150 socket has 1150 pins on it (obviously) and if I bend ONE of them pins then i'm screwed.

The pins are tougher than you think, they way he did it was fine.  You shouldn't be nervous about this, I've installed both AMD and Intel CPU's and IMO it's easier to fuck up an AMD CPU (it's easier to drop the CPU itself and damage the pins that way).  Don't worry about it, you'll be fine.  Just line it up, drop it in (just like you would with AMD), and give it a gentle wiggle.  Then close the cover plate over it.

Installing intel cpu is easy, theres only one way it can go in. U just gently put it in the socket and push down the retention arm (or w/e its called) and u are done.

I built my first pc this year after watching youtube vids and im running my pc just fine. Nothing to worry about.
