planning on building a PC and have decided on pretty much everything except a video card. I am planning on getting either a r9 280x or r9 290 from reliable brand when a deal pops up (sapphire, gigabyte, and msi). I already have a monitor and it is only capable of 1080p 60 hz and was wondering if I should actually get a r9 290 compared to a r9 280x. I know that there is no such thing as overkill when it comes to PC hardware but I would like to save the $80-90 by going with a r9 280 if it is all I need. I appreciate your advice.

Decided for yourself and look at the benchmarks http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1068?vs=1041 if you want to see a 280 just look at a 7950 boost

Yeah. A 280=7950 boost. OP if you want a 280x go for a 7970.

I´d probably go with a R9 290. You will be fine for quite a good long while in 1080p with all new releases.

the R9 280 is plenty for 1080P Ultra gaming

3GB VRAM is just enough for that res

when OCed you will be able to get fps close to the stock HD7970

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

Depends on you. 280x gives you pretty good fps and everything.

I'm happy i bought a 780 over a 770 though.

Just look at benchmarks of the games you play most and decide from there.

Eh I would still get a 290/780 but I guess the 280x is all you really NEED at 1080p. I like maxing things out so my personal choice would be 290 but the generic answer is 280x.

How much gaming do you do? Do you play very demanding games?

If you play a lot or you play cutting-edge games when you do play, get a 290/290x if you're going AMD. They're solid, and it'll last you a bit longer.

If you don't play a whole lot a 280x would be perfectly fine.
