Gimp can do pretty much anything you might want to do with an image.

So I want to make good looking thumbnails for YouTube! Basically I want it (the free software) to use a screenshot and layer a black 5th vertical and then some text on top of that! 

 

 

 

Basically it will look similar to this: post-24380-0-67491000-1407341313.png

Gimp can do pretty much anything you might want to do with an image.

GIMP is a fantastic free and open-source tool that is fantastic for anything you could possibly want to do with creating or editing images.  Plus, it's Windows AND Linux compatible!
