Grammar

EmeraldKiwi

I do a fair bit of reading on this forum and it has finally gotten to the point where all those spelling and grammar errors are too distracting, so what I'm going to do is explain when to use each of these commonly misused words. Feel free to completely ignore me and/or call me a grammar Nazi.

Their: This word shows ownership or possession of something. I went to their house.

There: This word shows where something is or where something occurred. I went to the top of that hill over there.

They're: This word is a contraction of "they are" and is used to describe what/how someone/something is doing an something. They're planning to build a PC.

To: This word is used to describe a direction, a limit or something else along those lines. I went to their house.

Two: This word is used in direct replacement of the number 2. I would like to buy two apples.

Too: This word is used in place of also, or an expression of superfluous...-ness... There are too many apples. Or: I would like an apple too (also).

Your: This word is used to describe possession, much like "their". I want to go to your house.

You're: This word is also a contraction; it is between "you" and "are". You're a grammar Nazi.

Who: This is used when you would use she or he. Who gave you that candy? He did.

Whom: This is used when you would use him or her. Whom shall I send this letter to? Send it to her.

I googled "common grammar mistakes" and here is the first link. It explains a bunch of other grammar mistakes that I didn't explain. You can also review who/whom there too.

Be courteous and use correct grammar. It makes everyone's life easier.

Now... Explain whom and who; whose and who's; bear and bare; thence, whence, and hence; it's and its; and literally.

Prisons have better education systems. They also have better food.

Maximum security or minimum security?

Probably both. Not all though.

That one mistake is all it takes to haunt their lives. For some: whatever. For others: they'll do whatever to get out and try to have normal lives again. People who've never been in jail (for that long) take education for granted.

This is frightening to me...

Before I left middle school, they installed security cameras and increased the amount of security guards. In high school, cops would patrol the halls, parking lot, and an entrance room was created along with pass codes for all doors leading into the school. I've never been to a school with a metal detector.

I totally agree with this, it makes reading lengthy texts and explanations really irritating, not to mention that it is kind of rude to ignore grammar completely out of laziness. And before someone points out grammatical errors that I've made in the past, it's my 3rd language, so please bear with it and be sure that this would never happen to me in my native tongue and it shouldn't happen to you (or at least not frequently) if english is your native language.

Pretty "cool" and interesting, but then again it kinda sad as some inner city schools are beyond help because people just don't care enough.

Guess the 24 hour monitoring kinda helps the (motivated) inmate keep on track as oppose to teens who just skip school and such.

Wow, there are some pretty bad schools where I live, DMV area but nothing that crazy unless you go into inner Baltimore and DC.

For one, extreme prisons want prisoners to serve their sentence. There's a reason why they keep death row prisoners alive so they can make it to their execution. Prisons for war criminals are either hellholes or maximum-maximum security.

Aside from 24-hour monitoring, prisoners don't have much of a choice. It's continue a life of crime and go back to jail; leave and work a meager job for the rest of your life; or try to get something close to a college education so they can a better life. Kids are too young, too arrogant, and too ignorant to know any better. Not to mention they're not that wise or smart to begin with even if they're more intelligent. Prisoners have years of experience to look back on.

I remember reading that there are schools that pay/bribe kids to get better grades. Yes, getting paid to freaking read a book, getting a good grade on an essay, or doing what almost every student in the world are doing for free. Third-world countries hunger for knowledge and would risk their lives for it and they're getting paid to do this shit everyone suffers through? In other places, parents and others would beat your ass if you got a bad grade much less a decent grade.
