I think this would suit your needs well when you get the cash together. (the avaton supports 64GB of ram and you can save 50 if you go with a single 8GB ecc chip instad of the 16 I used)

Update compatible 8GB option

Hi, Can anyone help me pick parts for a fast but cheap FTP/Video streaming server. I don't mind what CPU, GPU ECT. But I want at least 8GB of RAM and 4TB of storage and a small form factor case.

Thanks. :)

Couple of question What are you streaming videos with ? are you transcoding them on the fly to stream to tablets or over the web as well as on the network or just streaming the file as is (this will have a huge impact on the quality of the cpu the system needs.)

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

I highly recommend Ebay used parts. Make sure the seller has high feedback and gives Ebay Buyer's Protection.

I got two Xeon 4 core CPUs with 32GB of ECC DDR2 RAM and the motherboard all for $235. Pretty epic honestly. It sucks electricity like a gay vampire sucks ****, but you get the idea. Each RAM stick uses 10w on idle, and I have 8.

Up to you, but if power/electricity cost isn't a concern (it depends a lot on where you live) then this is the way to go imo.

I recommend Plex Media Server on Amahi, or if you go with ECC RAM, then Plex with FreeNAS.

Disclaimer: You don't need 8 cores or 32GB of RAM. I need those. You probably need 2 cores and 8GB of RAM at most, though 4 cores with 16GB would be good too for multiple streams going at the same time. So you could probably get that for $130-$150.

Where do you live? That decides a lot, both for Ebay and electricity prices.

So from that choice of CPU i assume you want to use server grade parts not just re-purposed consumer grade items.

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

So, your definition of "cheap" is pretty different from mine, but I'm cool with that. At those prices, I would go with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157475

It's uber power efficient, has 8 cores, can transcode three 1080p video streams on the fly at once without buffering, and is passively cooled. Be sure to get the correct RAM for it though (It's ECC Unregistered Unbuffered RAM, not Registered and not Buffered).

I love it so far.

Great case. I recommend the Silverstone SFX 450w PSU personally. The SFX form factor gives you room you need in the Node 304 for cable management.

Why do you need a GPU? FreeNAS' user interface is entirely web based. You won't need the GPU beyond setting it up for the first time, and the C2750D4I has built in graphics anyway as well as IPMI, so a graphics adapter is entirely unnecessary for it. Unless you decide you want to go with the Xeon & such, though I wouldn't recommend that.

Are you gaming on this ?

a 750Ti is extremely overkill for a server build

I'm thinking your needs would be better served with an 8 core Intel Avoton board would suit you better

The plex forums have people who are getting 4 real time 1080p streams out of them with no problems and it is a 20W part, very impressive

Oh, well that just sucks. :( Then I understand your choices for the other components. I still recommend the Silverstone SFX 450w if you can find it for a good price, and just get a GT 610. 750 Ti is waaay overkill.

You can buy them new shipped from the us on ebay for 220 or at scan.uk for 264

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asrock-c2750d4i-intel-intel-octa-core-avoton-c2750-ddr3-sata-iii-6gb-s-d-sub-mini-itx

It might seem expensive but remember the CPU and motherboard come as a package together (it is soldered on)

From what I remember power is quite a bit more expensive over there so remember to factor in the cost of running a 20W cpu 100% of the time vs a 70W over the coarse of a couple of years

System CPU : Ryzen 9 5950 doing whatever PBO lets it. Motherboard : Asus B550 Wifi II RAM 80GB 3600 CL 18 2x 32GB 2x 8GB GPUs Vega 56 & Tesla M40 Corsair 4000D Storage: many and varied small (512GB-1TB) SSD + 5TB WD Green PSU 1000W EVGA GOLD

Wow that PSU is expensive £234 Thank you for the advice :)

Ah, I figured. Well, the part list you had before was fine. It will work very well. I was just trying to help out in terms of efficiency, for power, for space, etc.

Thank you so much with the advice, I will look over it all. All this advice was so helpful and handy, thinking about it, I wouldn't mind spending some extra money for parts if they use less power. Right now I'm going to use the dell dimension e521 that I bought of a friend a few years ago until I get the money.

Again thank you for all the support :)

The ram is buffered and the motherboard thingy is unbuffered...not sure if that's a problem though? Just thought I'd point that out :)

Wow there is only 1 certified maker of 16GB Udimms for this board and you have to order directly from them and they don't list their prices : http://www.intelligentmemory.com/where-to-buy/ for anyone interested.

Ill update my post with some valid 8GB dimm choices

Certified only means that it's has been tested and proven to work with the board. I see no reason why the other dimms would not work, as long as they meet the boards specifications :)

Sorry I forgot to mention that they are the only maker of 16GB unbuffered ECC i have been able to find (it is 16 Gb on a single stick.) also I believe the op wanted ECC memory for stability since it will be running 24/7 (kind of overkill I know)

Does it have to be one dimm of 16gb or can it be 2x8 Gb? as I have found a couple that have 2x8gb;
