They're the same card but the ATI one runs Insanely hot and loud. I'd suggest the Sapphire Vapor-X

I got the Asus one just today, it's brilliant.

Much better in noise/cooling, with a nice overclock for more performance.

Sapphire Tri-x or vapor-x. Hands down the best choices.

ATI doesn't exist anymore, it was bought by AMD in 2006.

AMD or Nvidia = design the chip, default PCB, cooler, etc.
Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, Sapphire, EVGA, PNY, XFX, Zotac etc. = OEM's, they manufacture, distribute and sell the cards. Also they can modify the default design with better layout, components & coolers.

Some AMD R9 290 models:

  • Asus AMD R9 290 DirectCU II
  • Sapphire AMD R9 290 Vapor-X
  • Gigabyte AMD R9 290 WindForce 3X
  • XFX R9 290 Black Edition DD
  • Sapphire AMD R9 290 TRI-X OC
  • MSI AMD R9 290 Gaming (Twin Frozr)

Look at what you want from a graphics card, do you want it to be silent, run at cooler temperatures, overclock better etc. and then look for the card that best suits those needs.

I hope that at least somewhat helped and answered the question.

I bought the Asus r9 290 DirectCU II OC 1 week ago from Amazon.  Sold through Amazon, the Asus R9290X-DC2OC-4GD5 and R9290-DC2OC-4GD5 are basically the same cards with one having a 290x and $580 price and the other running a 290 and having a $429 price.  Externally they appear identical.

Asus USA doesn't sell R9290-DC2OC-4GD5 but Amazon WW does.

As Asus, Sapphire, Gigabyte, Xfx, Msi...  I've always had a good experience with ROG and there can't be more than a couple of fps difference between them.

I have Asus one, its mostly custom built, aside from ram chips and gpu die. not an amazing card, go with saphire or MSI unless you prefer Asus.
