so it has come to my attention that choosing between graphic cards is a mighty pain in the ass if you dont really know what you are doing and you are rather noob at this whole building a computer thing.

my main issue is that it is really hard to choose between the 2 companies because people will tell me that one is better then the other and usually have a good supporting argument for it.

my problem is that i dont like the price point of some of Nvidia's better cards but i also am concerned about getting AMD due to the horror stories i have been told.

im either looking at an R9 290x or gtx 780 or 780ti

right now i am using an old radeon in my machine

if i could get some insight and like compelling reasons to buy one over the other that would be awesome

(note i plan on getting 2 of which ever card the system will be water cooled)

R9 290X all the time.

It has more memory (4 GB I believe?) It is cheaper, it stacks up well against 780 ti and sometimes beats it in games.

It is hot though, so get a good cooler like the MSI twin frozr IV.

in order of performance of those 3 cards, the 780Ti is the best, then the r9 290x, then the 780

the 780Ti is considered the best performing gaming GPU, but costs a fair bit more than the 290x

The 290X can spit at a Titan if you OC it enough.

Just get a good cooler like Club3D, MSI (either TwinFrozr or Lightning), or Asus.

And make sure your PSU can handle that monster.

i was planning on a water cooling loop later down the track once i actually get everything. I feel i just need more then one opinion because my partner is being a butt and saying i should get a Titan Z because they are tank and blah blah nvidia fan girling continues....

but my main point is that i want to have good amount of certainty that what i buy wont just up and die on me

Asus is on par with Gigabyte, so I guess the Windforce must be terrible too?

people can call me a fanboy one way or the other all they like ive been on boths sides.

i wouldnt buy an r9-290x over a normal 290 (a 290 is 90% of a 290x for 80% of the price) r9-290x sucks compared to the normal 290.
an r9-290 outperforms and will last longer than a 780 while being cheaper.
a 780 looks better than an r9-290 (talking reference, aftermarket id go msi....)
a 780ti is more powerful than the crippled 780 but you pay for it..(a gtx780 is only 75% of a 780ti...)

as for features drivers etc both are the same.....unless you want to spend £2000 on a beast gaming rig and then stream it to a gameboy in which case nvidia all the way...

edit-oh you're goign to watercooler later, same boat (hee) as me then, im getting an r9-290 im debating between reference or msi still though...will prob get msi if i can find a nice block for it.

Dont take any advice from this ^ guy

pure performance the r9 290x is probably the strongest especially at high res the only problem is it gets hot its loud and uses more power weres the 780ti uses less power not as hot and quieter but it only has 3gbs vram :( if you dont plan on streaming to an nvidia shield and are fine with what i said about the r9 290x get it if not get the 780ti :)

Edit: for the love of god please dont get a titan z i will face car if u do.

My friend has a GTX 780ti, and they said they wished they just got the normal GTX 780. For the price differance, there is hardly any difference in frame rates in games, probally only between 3 and 7% in the majority of games. As for the ATI cards, I personally prefer Nvidia. I dont mind the AMD CPU's, but I have never liked the ATI graphics cards. The graphics card, just like the cpu, is always down to person preferance, and what your budget can accomodate.

AMD is better, Nvidia is merely preferred by Fanboys to show how rich they are.

I won't lie, that is a shitpost.

-snip-

OP, go with whatever the hell you want. Do your own research and don't ask people for their opinions. It doesn't matter if it's superior or not as long as it justifies their purchase.

You want solid price/performance, really need OpenCL, really excited for mantle or just really want FreeSync? Go for an r9 290

You want to stream games to an nvidia shield, really need CUDA, or perhaps you have a G-sync ready monitor? Go for a 780.

In my opinion, the 780 Ti and r9 290X doesn't make sense.

Pay so much more for only a tiny bit of extra juice, not worth it imo.

780 Ti > R9 290X

780 = R9 290

AMD has a slight bit of extra wattage needed to drive their cards, but the difference isn't going to make your power bill change all that much.

AMD reference coolers are dogshit.

AMD cards can be crossfired in any way you chose within the same architecture and scales slightly better than Nvidia cards (voodoo magic). Src for scaling: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/crossfire-vs-sli-780ti-780-290x-290-x-dual-triple-quad.195818/

AMD cards have less predictable overclocks due to different binning process than Nvidia, but generally considered good.

If you want the best that money can buy you, get the 780 Ti. It is currently the fastest card on the market.

And that is probably all the information you need.

Just a bit of a warning, this thread is going to explode with nvidia fanboys and amd fanboys. That's just how it is.

I'm not sure how the prices look outside of sweden, but if an r9 290x is almost the same price as a 780... pick up the r9 290x.
