So I've been looking at 2 routers to upgrade to since my current one sucks. I've been looking at the ASUS RT-AC68U because reviews say it's stable and fast. I've also been looking at the LINKSYS WRT1900AC but both are quite expensive. All I really need is dual-band, a fairly good software to include prioritization, and a good range (roughly 150 ft.) I'm really new to the whole router market so forgive me if I sound stupid. Are all good routers this expensive because I don't need all the fancy VPN whatever stuff. I just want something that works well and does what I need. Help would be very much appreciated, thanks.

I have the N600 with DDWRT and it's stable as a rock

But the ASUS router looks nice, it's just a bit expensive if you don't need the wireless AC

DD-WRT is amazing! When using my AC68U I had so many problems with speed dropping etc.

Installed DD-WRT and has been great, no problems at all.

Ok. And is there a place to download DD-WRT like an official website?

@X1XNobleX1X

http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

The range is pretty good, but it does have internal antennas

Make sure you have the correct model either: WNDR3700 or the new model WNDR3800 and the correct version number like V1 V2 V3 V4

If you need help when you get it (if you're afraid of bricking it) send me a PM and I'll help you out

I was looking around and found the WNDR4300. It's works with DD-WRT and it says it's a newer. I assume it's better and it's only 8 bucks more. http://amzn.to/1kv200T

So what are some of the features of this DD-WRT stuff and much better does it make the router? Also, should I go for the 4300 because it might have less DD-WRT support?

I'd look it up because it says they only support the v4, idk if the v4 is the only model they make  :wacko:

I looked on the DD-WRT forum and it says that the WNDR4300 is basically the 3700V4 so it should be quite similar.

Oh well then buy it, :D

I'd like to know the benefits of DD-WRT first before I buy though.

I don't know all of them, since the benefits are different for every router

On the top of my head there's stuff like better QoS, better DNS control, graphs that show usage / uptime / etc, stability, the ability to use your router as a bridge with another router, the ability to increase your WiFi range, support for VPNs, samba sharing, better control over firewall, and more I can't think of

Alright. I've read up on some forums and Amazon reviews and I've decided to get the WNDR4300. (N750) I'll PM you when I get it for help with DD-WRT installation.
