Quick Question

Go to solution Solved by airdeano,

Well if it's any comparison, I don't really play any games because I mostly video edit.

depending on motherboard fan profile and how the stock fan reacts to the CPU

load, yes, it'll get annoying pretty quick, especially loaded 70-100% for rendering.

it is all over-kill for non-clocking temperatures, but as said before, doesn't hurt to

be cooler and quieter when doing the same tasks over and over. after spending

20-30 8hr editing/rendering sessions, the stock fan will let you know it is still alive.

the PH-TC12DX is a good choice, good for 12-15° load temp drops (depending

on case ventilation) and quieter operation.

Hi guys,

I just have a quick question relating to 3rd-party CPU coolers. I want to know the following:

• Is it worthwhile going with a 3rd-party CPU cooler if you're using a non-K version of an Intel CPU like the i7 4790?

I apologise if this questions has been asked before by myself or someone else. :)

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Only if noise is a concern. They will be loud but the extra cooling on a locked CPU won't matter. At least IMHO.

Depends on the cooler, but you can get a fanless aftermarket cooler or a ultra quiet cooler for non-K processors for less noise than the stock cooler.

And most aftermarket coolers look better, so if you have a windowed side panel, your build will look nicer.

But in most cases, the stock one is just fine.

Well the power consumption of the 4790 non-K edition will be fairly lower than some 4770K & 4790K with mild overclocks (that might not overclock well). It's still haswell so goody two-shoes. I think compared to installing the stock reference in conjunction with say a hyper 212 evo quietness is slightly more achievable & heat dissipation is better however isn't the newer heatsink manufactured now with copper,

Well if noise and ascetics are the concern its worth perusing otherwise not really worth it. And if the cpu is running above 80C yea then it important to take a closer look. And seeing how most gamers want a quiet gaming machine the bigger quieter cooler is almost always preferred as long as one can afford it.

I just have heard multiple times on this forum how the Intel CPU cooler isn't good enough, what would be your thoughts on this guys?

BTW, thanks to the pair of you for your quick replies. It's much appreciated. :)

It is not good enough for most ENTHUSIAST cases. It is loud and obnoxious. Because we are all enthusiasts here, the cooler is not good enough. We don't want the stock cooler but for average cases it does fine.

Saying "we" sounds cheesy in my head but whatever.

I have been thinking about going with the Phanteks PH-TC12DX for aesthetic reasons but not sure if it'd be overkill for a 4790.

I put my Stock 3570K cooler on a Pentium G645 in my brothers computer and he has never had an issue. But hes not me, and he plays on the console.

Well if it's any comparison, I don't really play any games because I mostly video edit.

I've seen people posting in CPU section about temps spiking up to 90Cs with non-K and stock cooler. But its so much depending on chip and other things like overall case cooling. You are fine with it.

Thanks guys, I couldn't ask for better help. I want to mark both of your posts as best answer because you both have given me a great answer. I know most members usually get around this by quoting the multiple best answer in a post and making that post of theirs the best answer. You guys don't mind if I do the same?

I decided to mark them both differently because that seems to be the best way to do it.
