Windows 7 vs 8/8.1 just flavours?

Ariona

So me and a friend were talking, I am currently running Win7 Ultimate 64bit, While he has upgraded to 8.1 about 5 months ago, He claims not only is everything more stable and runs slightly better gaming wise but he actually uses some of the apps...  I asked a few other friends and its pretty 50/50 on weather I should upgrade or not, and someone said it's just dif flavours, I don't mind upgrading to Win 8.1 if it's worth it Ignore the money ;) I'm looking at the over all value, and use of it. while I love my Win7 and I feel its universal, It is getting more and more dated while Win 8.1 seems to have a Lot of it's issues fixed. Any advice or opinions ?

Sounds like you are better of trying it rather than talking about it.

Granted, I am a pretty quick adopter, but as soon as I switched from Windows 7 to 8.1, it was like love at first site.

I actually use a lot of the Metro apps (lots of games, some of the other handy ones, and the weather app).

It's not worth $100 dollars. Just wait for windows 9.

Edit: Don't get me wrong. Windows 8.1 is decent, but again, not worth $100 dollars.

I plan to I'm just dreading it because I worked so hard to downgrade from 8 > 7 and now 8.1 I need to upgrade to? I kinda want a better reason to upgrade.

I hear that from some of my friends as well that the metro apps aside from some of the stupid ones like photo viewer, Are really good. and that there are some apps like a pandora(?) app that works on the desktop like a widgit.

I said not to worry because my MB is an OEM with Win8 and the upgrade to 8.1 is free.

If you are on Windows 7 Ultimate right now, there's pretty much zero advantage going to Win8/8.1

I tried to make the switch recently, it requires you to give up a lot of your freedom over your folders, as they are now even more locked down than before, requiring you to go through extra loops to unlock them,

You lose the beautiful Aero for the awful single color UI of Win8/8.1, *puke*

I had issues where my softwares(mail client, ATI control panel, Logitech gaming software and AV suite) wouldn't even boot with windows, forcing me to reboot and hope they came up, half the time they didn't... (This was the primary deal breaker for me, I could live with the rest... but not this, and yes.. I tried doing sfc /scannow, tried formatting a few times, nothing worked.)

Even if you install Classic Shell, for some stuff, like session manager, you will be forced back into the modern UI for no good reason...

The ribbon style menu on Explorer windows is just awful and unnessesary 99% of the time, using OldNewExplorer fixes it, but that's a third party addon.

Honestly, the only things I liked about Win8/8.1, is the new task manager.
