I used to do thin spread on the heat spreader and I think in my limited experience that is the best way but to achieve the appropriate thin is pretty much of a hassle to me that I think pea is the next best thing to do... line usually turns out to be too much... never tried Xs but that seems to be a definite too much...

I always use the line method.
