He's looking to get the best processor he can get for his computer build, he's been looking at the i5 haswell CPU's but they fail to fall under his budget. I mentioned to him the G3258 Anniversary Unlocked processor that he can overclock and get decent performance. Is it worth looking into i3 processors instead, get the G3258, or break a little bit in the budget and get the i5? He's building this exclusively for gaming so your help is appreciated!

If you're using it for gaming, I recommend jumping up and grabbing a quad core i5.

try a higher end AMD cpu like the 8320? it should fall under his budget with performance on par with an i5

Woah calm down. It doesn't matter. He will still see the replies.

To the OP:

Depending on the GPU, an overclocked G3258 will do fine.

just get a normal 270 it's the exact same as 270x* for cheaper (NO X) Also MSI's TwinFrozr has issues w/ the 270 and 270x  as MSI reused the cooler from the 7850 and 7870 respectively but the GPU on the PCB was slightly moved to accomodate updates/tweaks causing less optimal cooling... Take the money and pocket it or get a 8320 for 2 extra cores on the CPU, 4More GB RAM, and/or an SSD (any of these may require another slight tweak like 500GB HDD and to get an SSD)

Isn't this a completely different PCB though, as my 280x has a completely new redesigned PCB, wouldn't the 270x use an updated PCB and cooler? (My 280x is 067, the third model)

no... 270x and 270 are the exact same card inside and out...  280 and 280x are different... 270 and 270x are redesigned PCBs of the 7870 and 280 is 7950 and 280x is 7970 ,-,
