I think it's useful for comparing reference card a from same series with reference card b (e.g. checking what the difference between a 760 and a 780 is core/mem/clock etc).

Because GTX 760 > R9 290X

 

MY superclocked 760 begs for mercy from my 290. there's roughly a 40-50% performance gap.

 

But I concede to Gpuboss and their wisdom of the graphix.
