I've used them to check the spec difference between different generations of Nvidia card (to see where my 660 stacked up and stuff)

I think it's useful for comparing reference card a from same series with reference card b (e.g. checking what the difference between a 760 and a 780 is core/mem/clock etc).

MY superclocked 760 begs for mercy from my 290. there's roughly a 40-50% performance gap.
