Then that's why because if you have a 3gb 780 at 2.5k on high/ultra you will get low FPS it's normal. Change the res to 1080 and it'll go high again.

nope :)

I have had this setup for a year, with a 670 and I had higher FPS. Also, I tried low/1080p when the problems started, with no change in fps

the problem has magically vanished. I promise I didn't do anything new since my last post ^^

I was starting to go bald from scratching my head. Glad it's solved.

no updates today, just checked the windows logs. no driver or steam updates either :P
