This past week I built my gaming rig and I'm a bit uneasy about my CPU temps.  It's an i7 4790K cooled by a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.  It idles around 35C, under gaming load it runs around 65-75C and when running Prime95 it goes to around 90C.  Is this normal with a CM Hyper 212 Evo and this CPU?

Completely normal if your ambient temperatures are around 23 to 25C.

Prime 95 is an unrealistic load. You can treat that as a worst case scenario.

Those temps sound about right, the idle might be a bit high but the motherboard is probably just got the fan turned down when the temps are low because there is no benefit to running the fan @100% when it can run it low and slow and keep the PC quiet well maintaining acceptable temps I wouldn't really worry about the chip getting too hot unless you're pushing over 100C under prime and over 90C in games then there is something that is going on like poor airflow, mounting, thermal paste, exc.

Its fine. Also use IETU instead of prime 95 for stress testing.

Prime95 the absolute worst case scenario and you are still a fair distance away from TJMax during Prime95 so you can safely say that you are fine. Still though going from 35 idle to 70 under load seems a bit unrealistic. My I5-2400 goes from 45 idle to 55-60 under load on the stock cooler and I would expect to see better with a 212.

This is why you should not get an FX CPU for ANY scenario other than rendering on a budget http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/286142-fx-8350-r9-290-psu-requirements/?p=3892901 http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/266481-an-issue-with-people-bashing-the-fx-cpus/?p=3620861

It could be the thermal paste that ships with the CM 212 Evo.  It looked a bit like grey rubber cement.  If this is the case then maybe I'll go with some Arctic Silver MX4.
