Another philosophical  thread by joelthezombie ;)

Are numbers real thing?

Yes?

No?

If you say yes, where do they exist?,another dimension?

If you say no, if numbers arent real, why can we use them to describe real things?

Post your thoughts THEN watch this

Time is the 4th dimension and we just happen to experience it linearly.

I answered yes to the poll, I guess because they're quantifiers used by humans to count things? And just because there's a set called real numbers? :P

unless you believe string theory and you cant say what dimension is what.and theres spacial dimensions and time dimensions and string theory is 9 spacial dimensions and two time dimensions

If numbers were to exist, wouldn't words also?

words are only fluctuations in air pressure that is unscrambled by your brain. so its real but its not.

Numbers only exist if they things they describe can also exist. So first, ask yourself: "What makes an orange an orange". When it it that what we call a part of an orange becomes or is no longer a part of the orange.

We never have exact measurements but instead more and more "accurate" estimations. You never really have an object. You have an estimated selection of things you call an object.

Edit: Language works the same way. Each word is based off of some estimated meaning itself and a language can never describe everything and things can often be lost in translation or definition. Each and every language is inconsistent and incomplete. Each time you use a language or any type of communication or attempt of comprehension, you are estimating.

By the same logic you could say everything is made up of atoms and a tree isn't a tree and that it's just a collection of atoms.

A tree can be a tree and a collection of atoms at the same time because the words are labels. In all practicality, words exist but only as substitutions for ideas, which are substitutions for the estimated "objects".

Words exist. Words are more ideas than fluctuations in air pressure. Not all words can be spoken but many can be read. Words are things as much as an orange is a thing.

no a tree is made of atoms words are a perception that physically speaking mean nothing they are just air waves that are deciphered by our brain. and atoms are made of something to they arent everything

Numbers are real because we created them. They're used to quantify things. Here's a philosophical question: What is consciousness?

"It pays to keep an open mind, but not so open your brain falls out." - Carl Sagan.

"I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you" - Edward I. Koch

"I didn't die! I performed a tactical reset!" - Apollolol

I have already seen this video i watch numberphile, periodicvideos and all other brady's channels btw there are like 10 channels run by the same person  .

I do not agree with factionalism at all, but i am confused between Platonism and nominalism,

One interesting thing about numbers is that if there is an intelligent alien civilization they would use numbers in the same way as we do only the base might be different and the script but other than that there numbers will have the same meaning as ours even though they are not found in nature.
