Okay guys, so this is my first post. Basically I just built a new budget gaming rig. The specs are here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WD2Z99

Basically I was told that this motherboard can overclock my CPU. The video I basically formed the build around can be found here:

I've tried using Intel XTU, but I'm not sure if I'm using it right, I've also tried overclocking in my MSI bios version 6.5, however the cpu multiplier won't go past 32 even though I'm using the Intel Pentium "K" (G3258)

If someone could give me an explanation I'd appreciate it. This board has OC Genie 4 so it has to have some overclocking of the cpu some how right? I also have no extra money because I'm a college student working 2 jobs, so buying a z97 board is out of the question. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Also, here's a link to a YouTube help video I made:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNSfxsIgKRw&list=UU4LGWtJpze5uF4BW9uI86Jw

another user have this same problem

revert back to stock settings and enable TurboBoost function

and start increasing the multiplier on stock voltage

Budget? Uses? Currency? Location? Operating System? Peripherals? Monitor? Use PCPartPicker wherever possible.

I dont think your board will allow you to OC that cute little pentium.

officially H81 chipsets do not support Overclocking.

you also do not have any cpu voltage options in your bios.

can you post a full screenshot of xtu "all controls" tab.

well you might be in luck because xtu shows your multi unlocked.

you still have no voltage options

slide these all the way to the right and hit apply

turbo boost power max

processor current limit

turbo boost short power max

turbo boost power time window

select 32xmulti on both cores

click blue wrench on lower right side. select cpu core voltage

run cinebench r15 and watch your voltage

next increase multi to 33x. run cinebench r15 again and watch your voltage

keep increasing multiplier followed by a cinebench for a quick test.hopefully the "auto" voltage rule increases your core voltage.

confirm frequency and voltage with cpuz and xtu

The article about the MSI H81 overclocking in that video description is ancient and would have been patched in a microcode update a long time ago. Not a very well informed video.

Only relevant thing would be ASUS H81 boards but it's only a matter of time before Intel block that with a microcode too.

  • 4 weeks later...

These people are lying to you. Do not listen to them they have no idea what they are talking about

If you don't own his MoBo and CPU you probably shouldnt be commenting on this post trying to tell him that he cannot overclock.

Head over to my forum, I figured out the solution to this in a couple hours of fiddling with things. The solution is posted there:
