im getting the new g3258, me being a long time amd user im used to just being able to oc with anything. but do i need a special board to over clock my new g3258?

Any z97 board will work. Some select h97 boards can as well...but z97 is really the way to go. (any z87 will as well--with a bios update)

Yeah I know, but maybe, if we as the community help eachother out with explaining stuff to others, it will occur alot less :)

You need a Z board.

I am planning to buy a G3258 as well. Does this mean that I cannot overclock with ASRock B85M PRO4? I really just want to OC the CPU and maybe the GPU and have all the basic needed mb functions. Do I definitely need a Z board or is it just recommended?

Its pretty much a requirement, you should really just get a z board--especially if you intend to SLI/XFIRE.

Non Z boards aren't really designed for heavy oc's, especially on more power hungry chips. On a g3258 it should be fine, but a z97 should be able to be pushed further, and also be better for i5/i7 oc'g.

I am so confused right now. You are suggesting to get a Z board but the video tells me that budget Asus boards are ok too. I am on a really tight budget (will have a discussion topic later when the budget is fixed and not changable) and getting getting a 5 extra 5 fps performance for 40 euros is not worth for my needs.

How about Asus H81M-D? Or is it worth to spend twice as much for a Asus Z87M PLUS?

I am more confused than before now.

a non-z board will work. A z board will over clock better, and be able to handle more power--i.e. an h87/97 board could potentially handle a pentium over clock, but I wouldn't want to be overclocking an i7 on one. Z boards have a more sophisticated power delivery system, z boards can also technically oc a bit further since you can mess with the base clock speed--but thats just a mess and I wouldn't advice doing that on a z board either.

Long story short....Z board have always been the way to go if you intend to oc. If you absolutely no intention to step up to a 4690k/4790k/broadwell-k from the pentium cpu, and you're on a very tight budget, then go with one of the h. Also, do keep in mind that if you have any intention to SLI/XFIRE then you need to make sure the motherboard you pick has at least 2 pcie 2.0/3.0 slots (SLI--you MUST get a z-board). AFAIK, h97 asus, as rock, and gigabyte boards can be oc'd with--not sure about MSI (I know some can, but I'm not sure which).

With all that said....There are plenty of z97 boards, which aren't that much more than h97. H97 bottoms out around $80, whereas z97 bottoms out around $100. You're comparing high end z97 boards (ones which support SLI/XFIRE--such as MSI Z97 Gaming 5) to h97 boards... Not exactly a fair comparison.
