How to backup laptop?

Bemused80

I have an old laptop with xp and have a few programs that only run on xp. My laptop is near dead and i would like to back it up and if possible make it a virtual drive on my new pc.

Is it worth the hassle of trying to virtualize it and save the data, or would it be better making a fresh virtual drive and reinstalling the software?

And how would i do either?
