I may upgrade my pc soon, so this is what i will upgrade with, is it good? I already have a gtx 660 and a 500gb ssd, so those aren't in the build. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/H9cPQ7 I may need to change the case because it has no from usb 3.0, but would i be able to adapt the internal connector to the usb 2.0 one? i rarely use usb devices besides keyboard and mouse, and those go in the back. my max budget is $350, anything above that would need to be twice as fast to be worth it.

If you are going to upgrade your PSU, might as well get a higher one. Say, 750w just so when you buy a new GPU you won't be upgrading that PSU again.

500w is fine, even if I ad a 780ti it would still be just above 400w

So you don't plan on overclocking? I thought that was the main reason to go with an AMD cpu other than the lower cost.

His current system:
  • CPU
    phenom 9650 2.3X4
  • Motherboard
    unknown pegatron board
  • RAM
    8Gb
  • GPU
    PNY Geforce GTX 660
  • Case

  • Storage
    512Gb ssd
  • PSU
    500w
  • Display(s)
    HP 2009m
  • Cooling
    1 stock 80mm fan

It's all right for upgrades. Boards a bit crap and has no front USB3.0 header from what I can see at a quick look though (has IDE :D)

You'd also be limiting your SSD to Sata 3GB/s still...

i currently have this:

cpu: phenom 9650 (quad core 2.3ghz)

motherboard: i have no idea

ram: 4x2gb ddr2

storage 500gb ssd

case: hp case from 2009

psu: 500w random psu (it may be decent but it is mounted in a cage so i can't see it (no what came with the pc))

gpu: gtx 660

i may overclock, but the mobo probably won't oc well and buying a better mobo and cpu fan would delay the purchase a month or so, and then i would be able to get an fx 8320, and that would be better.

pcpartpicker says that it does have from usb 3.0 but the case doesn't. i didn't see it only had sata 2, its hard to find a good motherboard at this price.

what i though was amd is better until you get to the fx 8350/4790, and then intel is better.

Not really.

i5 4690K beats FX8350.

And depending on scenario i3 beats out the 6300.

If you're struggling to find a non-crap motherboard on the cheap with modern features (Sata 6GB/s, USB3.0 etc) then Intel might just be the way to go.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/rZcPQ7

In GPU bound games performs same as FX, in CPU bound games (wow, minecraft etc) will crush FX. And in 6 threaded games FX will win but I can only think of 2 from the top of my head(bf4, crysis 3).

In video editing / encoding etc FX will win. The 6300 can also be overclocked to deliver quite good performance, but with that choice of board and no aftermarket cooler it isn't an option.

i3 offers an upgrade path too. (Broadwell i5/7) whereas FX6300 offers the 8350 which in most scenarios is no better.

Changed the case, same price and a helluva lot better. Unless you want the really aggressive (or gaudy) look from the NZXT.

If you're upgrading again in a month or so there's absolutely no point in buying the 6300 now. I'm pretty sure the cost difference, unless you're getting a wicked deal on the 6300 isn't much either.

The cost difference between a 750w and 500w power supply is also not that great.

would this be better? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/tQyRYJ the 6300 has 3/4 the single threaded performance of the 4130, but 1.5x the muti core performance.

AMD have around half the per core performance :/

The board ticks the SATA6 box. But still no USB3 or overclocking of any kind. (Which if you're buying an FX you really ought to be doing).

this is where i got those numbers:  ( i misread the multicore performance) I will do some more research with amd vs intel now.

There are places where there will be no difference between i3 and FX6300. So go with the better platform - LGA1150

There are places where the FX6300 will crush the i3 - Such as video encoding

There are places where i3 crushes FX6300 - Such as single/lightly threaded games and applications.

What games / applications do you run and what ones do you think you'll run in the future?

Hmm to me they all seem like applications where there'd be no difference and in some cases (e.g. minecraft) the i3 will win.

Not sure about battlefront though.

Hmm. FX will probably win but only by a few FPS.

With mantle + an R9 270 (I recommend this strongly over GTX660) you wouldn't tell the difference.

Ah OK, between the 6300 and the i3 I think you'd be happy with either to be honest, but i3 offers nicer upgrade options and more platform features.

would it be worth it to get this instead? http://pcpartpicker.com/p/PdxC4D more performance per core and almost double in muticore, this build is only $25 more (I couldn't fine the exact motherboard, so i have a similar one. (nvm, the price was low because i forgot the psu) this is what it would be: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/YTzst6
